Boys Athlete of
the Week

Coty Kramer

Harvard, sr.

Kramer was part of four first-place finishes at the IHSA Class 1A Genoa-Kingston Sectional, winning the 100- and 200-meter dashes, the long jump and running the anchor leg of Harvard’s 4x200 relay.

Kramer also qualified out of the 200 at Thursday’s IHSA Boys State Track and Field Meet at Eastern Illinois University’s O’Brien Stadium, although he missed the finals in his other three events.

Girls Athlete of
the Week

Kayla Beattie

Woodstock, jr.

Beattie won the Class 2A 3,200-meter run and took second in the 1,600 at the IHSA Girls Track and Field State Meet last weekend at Eastern Illinois University’s O’Brien Stadium.

Beattie and her sister, Elise, who took third in both the 1,600 and 3,200, put Woodstock in fifth place for the meet with 32 points.

Kayla won the 3,200 in 10:30.62, her personal best, and was 10 seconds faster than any runner in the Class 3A race.

Noteworthy

Harvard’s Kramer advances: Harvard boys track coach Dennis Eisele felt his team accomplished a lot during the season, but the Hornets’ finish was a bit disappointing Thursday.

Only sprinter Kramer advanced from the preliminaries of the IHSA Boys Track and Field State Meet 1A competition at Eastern Illinois University’s O’Brien Stadium. Kramer made it in the 200-meter dash.

Kramer, a senior, took ninth in that race last year and will again be in the finals Saturday. The Hornets hoped for more with nine entries in eight events. Kramer entered the 100 with one of the fastest times from sectional meets, but false-started in that race.

“I just jumped the gun,” Kramer said. “It was pretty obvious. That’s the first time I’ve done it. It’s really a bummer. After that I was really disappointed and frustrated with myself. I felt like I ran my fastest [in the 200] and did well in that race.”

Harvard’s Mark Sadler and the 4x800 relay team figured to have good shots of advancing, but neither made it. Kramer also had a shot in the long jump and 4x200 relay, but he missed in those events.

“The kids have done so well,” Eisele said. “They’re disappointed today because they didn’t get the results they wanted. We had a really nice season and competed well all year. Today, was just had some things not go our way.”
