ROLLING MEADOWS – Cary-Grove’s Chris Federighi won his first two matches handily before running into trouble and injury in the third round on the opening day of the IHSA Boys Tennis State Tournament on Thursday.

Federighi lost to Rafe Mosetick of Hinsdale Central, 6-4, 6-1, in his third-round match and will open play today in the fourth round of the consolation bracket.

The first set was tight, but Federighi could not outlast the consistency of Mosetick. Federighi began the second set by breaking Mosetick’s serve but dropped the next four games. Two blisters on the palm of his hand spoiled any hope of a comeback.

“I hit a kick serve, and I could feel [the blisters] break,” Federighi said.

Waltzing through conference and sectionals without much of a challenge might have hurt Federighi, who has not played many tight matches this year. Mosetick is at the other end of the competitive spectrum both in opponents and practice partners.

“[Mosetick] plays tough matches all year long,” Federighi said. “He’s used to it.”

Federighi’s first two matches Thursday played out much like his other recent matches and were not very competitive: a 6-2, 6-0 win against Fenwick’s Ted Bruce and a 6-0, 6-2 win against Barrington’s Varun Parekh.

“I just played steady,” Federighi said. “That’s pretty much all I had to do.”

Trojans coach Bud Lachel said the difference in the match against Mosetick was Federighi’s inability to play to the level he his capable.

“Shots that Chris normally hits he wasn’t hitting,” Lachel said. “Chris normally hits some good passing shots, and it just wasn’t there today.”

Quinn Revak and Brandon Curtis won their first-round doubles match for Prairie Ridge, defeating Geneseo’s Taylor Mighell and Shawn DePauw, 7-6 (7-3), 6-2. Revak and Curtis lost their next two matches in the second round of the championship and consolation draws.

Crystal Lake Central’s Tommy Nelson lost his first-round match but came back to win two. Nelson defeated Chicago Latin’s Bowen Tretheway, 6-2, 6-2, and Fenwick’s Jack Sloan, 6-3, 6-1 in the consolation draw. In the third consolation round, Nelson lost to Edwardsville’s Cameron Randall, 6-2, 6-2, to finish the tournament at 2-2.

Crystal Lake South’s Scott Subak and Andy DeBoer lost their first-round match but won their first consolation round, defeating Johnsburg’s Brayton Regner and Colin Goulet, 1-6, 6-3, 6-1, and finished the tournament at 1-2.

Also for South, Brad Wiegand and Dan Arnold lost to No. 2 seed Sam Bloom and Krishna Ravella of Hinsdale Central, 6-0, 6-0, in the first round. The South duo came back to beat Sam Frampton and Aneesh Kanakamedala from Chicago University, 7-5, 4-6, 6-0, in their first consolation match. Wiegand and Arnold also ended the tournament at 1-2.
