McHenry makes final at regional

CARY – Pitching and defense are the hallmarks of winning baseball.

McHenry’s Pat Murphy showed off the pitching portion of that equation Friday in an IHSA Class 4A Cary-Grove Regional semifinal, striking out nine as the second-seeded Warriors defeated third-seeded Hoffman Estates, 6-1. McHenry will play top-seeded Cary-Grove in today’s regional final at 4:30 p.m.

Joe Ray had two RBIs for McHenry (21-13).

Class 3A Hampshire Regional: Corey Peterson drove in Justin Henderson with the winning run in the eighth inning as second-seeded Prairie Ridge defeated third-seeded Crystal Lake Central, 4-3.
Prairie Ridge (26-10) will play top-seeded Burlington Central at 3 p.m. today for the regional title.

Tyler Johnson had three hits, including two doubles and two RBIs, for the Tigers (21-14).

BOYS TENNIS

IHSA State Tournament: At Arlington Heights, Chris Federighi lost in the sixth round of the consolation draw to Gordon Zhang of Naperville North, 6-1, 6-2, to finish with a 4-2 record at state. 

Federighi defeated Griffin Pils of Libertyville, 6-3, 6-2, in the fourth consolation round and Marist’s Alex Haizel, 6-4, 6-4, in the fifth round.
