The Johnsburg senior middle hitter then realized she liked everything about the Hawks’ volleyball program and Sunday made an oral commitment to play at Quincy in 2011. Schmitt was deciding between four schools and had taken official visits to Butler, Illinois-Chicago and Missouri Science and Technology before deciding on Quincy. “It’s so nice to make the decision before my senior year starts,” said Schmitt, who helped Johnsburg to a 21-16 overall record and a third-place finish in the Fox Valley Conference Fox Division last fall. “I want to go into something like pre-med, and they have a good program.” Schmitt said she was recruited through her club volleyball team, Crystal Lake-based Sky High, where she plays with Crystal Lake South senior Brittany Atkinson, who committed to Quincy last fall. Schmitt is on pace to graduate next spring in the top 10 percent of her class and has received a near-full ride to Quincy, she said. The remainder of her tuition could be covered pending her final grades from Johnsburg. “I think this is absolutely a great fit for her,” Johnsburg coach Sue Feely said. “She was deciding between playing middle and playing outside, and I know she’ll be able to play middle, which I know made her decision easier.” Quincy, a Division II program, finished 7-21 overall last fall under coach Keith Rubio. |
