Haugens hired as Hampshire coach

Ed Haugens, who stepped down after last season as the girls basketball head coach at Jacobs, has accepted the varsity girls basketball coaching job at Hampshire and will lead the Whip-Purs during the 2010-11 season, District 300 announced Wednesday.

“I’m extremely excited to have this opportunity,” Haugens said. “This is a chance that doesn’t come around very often, to be able to coach at a place like Hampshire that has so much tradition and success. I’m thrilled.”

Haugens spent seven years coaching Jacobs, leading the Golden Eagles to the IHSA Class AA state quarterfinals in 2004. Jacobs (26-6) shared the Fox Valley Conference Valley Division title with Cary-Grove last season and lost in a regional championship.

Former Hampshire coach Sue Ellett stepped down after last season, vacating the position for Haugens.

Haugens will move from Jacobs – also a D-300 school – to Hampshire to teach math.

The coach’s experience should make it easier for the program to transition into the FVC, a change the school will make in the fall of 2011.

“Ed Haugens is a veteran coach who is well-known and respected in the area,” Hampshire athletic director Dave Hicks said in a news release. “His experience in the Fox Valley Conference will be a great resource when we move to the FVC.”
