Break pays off for Anderberg
CARY – Coming into the McHenry County Junior Golf Association’s Cary Open on Wednesday, no golfer has shot an under-par round on the year. That changed when Katlyn Anderberg shot a 1-under-par 37 to defeat Amalia Emma and Laura Palarz by six shots and win the senior girls division of the event at Cary Country Club. Anderberg said that a break in playing helped her game. “I had been struggling the last couple of tournaments and took a little mini-vacation over the weekend,” Anderberg said. “I took a break from golf and put the clubs away. I came back the last couple days and really hit the practice hard. I think taking the break and stepping back a little bit really helped reboot the system a little bit and everything really clicked.” Bradley Hyland shot a 2-over 74 to win the senior boys division by five shots over Brendon Knaizer. After shooting 3-over on the back side, which were his first nine holes of the day, Hyland shot 1-under on the front nine to take home the victory. Hyland said that solid play was the name of the game on the day. “The biggest key for me was making birdies on the par-5s,” Hyland said. “I hit my driver well and hit my irons well into the greens, which helped out a lot.” The junior boys division was won by Riley Lindholm, who shot a 8-over 80 for a two-shot win over Daniel DePrey and three-shot win over Patrick Biewald, Matt Weidner and Mickey Evans Jr. Lindholm had a chance to shoot in the 70s but bogeyed the 18th hole. Lindholm said that his short game saved the round. “I was getting up and down a lot, I think I got up and down five times on the back nine,” Lindholm said. “I hit my driver pretty straight and hit a few fairways. It was disappointing not to shoot in the 70s.” In the junior girls division, Delainey Peterson shot a 4-over 42 and won by two shots over Danielle Roulo, who had won the last three MCJGA events. Peterson said that although her game wasn’t perfect, it worked out in the end to win for the first time this year. “I got real windy off the 17th and 18th tees and those holes got me going. I had a couple blow-up holes,” Peterson said. “It’s really nice to win. I got third place and I had been waiting to get first place for a while now.” The Billy Vahldieck McHenry County Junior Amateur is the next stop for the MCJGA Monday and Tuesday at Boone Creek Golf Club in McHenry. |
