The Community High School District 155 school board is expected today to approve the hiring of Jason Bott as Crystal Lake South’s athletic director.

Bott recently was tabbed to succeed Jim Stuglis, who stepped down as South’s athletic director in late June.

Entering his ninth year as a physical education teacher at South, Bott served as South’s assistant athletic director last year and is thrilled to take on his new responsibilities.

“When I first got into physical education, I knew eventually I would like to become an AD,” said Bott, who also is the physical education department chair at South. “This was an opportunity I did not want to pass up.”

South Principal Marsha Potthoff said the school interviewed seven candidates for the job before deciding on Bott, who she believes to be perfectly suited for the position.

“Jason is going to bring a lot of energy to the job,” Potthoff said. “He has a great work ethic, and we have valued his leadership since he has been at South. We’ve already seen a lot of that leadership from his job as the head of the PE department.

“He’s very organized, and I know this has always been his goal.”

An internal search is underway to hire a new assistant athletic director, and Potthoff said she expected to start interviewing candidates this week.

Bott also has served as an assistant varsity boys basketball coach and is not sure how his new responsibilities will jibe with that position. Bott said he planned to discuss the details with head boys basketball coach Dan DeBruycker and could serve as a volunteer assistant this season. Bott also has been a strength and conditioning coach at South for the past eight years.

Having been on the sidelines and working closely with South’s coaches over the years will be to Bott’s benefit as he moves into his new position.

“We have a great group of coaches at South,” said Bott, “and I’m really looking forward to working with them in a new way this year.”
