Cahill wants FVC title

Scott Cahill has been busy this summer preparing for the high school golf season.

The Jacobs senior, who played in tournaments throughout the Midwest, including in Minnesota, Wisconsin and Ohio, along with a trip to Las Vegas, returns as the reigning Northwest Herald Boys Golfer of the Year. He also has committed to play next season at Miami of Ohio as the 2010 season gets under way Monday.

“This past tournament season I took very seriously to get my scholarship,” Cahill said. “I took some time off to rest, and now I’m looking to have a good, relaxing time with my team and help some of the younger kids.”

The focus now is on winning a Fox Valley Conference championship for the Golden Eagles after falling one shot short last season.

“It’s a very big goal to win conference as a team,” Cahill said. “I felt we should have been up there last season – had a few unfortunate things happen – and now we are looking to come back this year and win.”

Jacobs coach Jeremy Bauer said Cahill is someone the other players on the team can look up to.

“He is obviously the standard everyone wants to get up to,” Bauer said. “People see the kind of time and effort he puts in, so they know if they want to follow in his footsteps, whether it is the younger group or the guys his same age, they know that you have to put a ton of time into it to get something out of it.”

The FVC race could be wide open this season with the departure of many of the top players from last season to graduation. Along with Cahill, Crystal Lake South’s Nick Robles will be a player to watch in the FVC.

On the team side, Crystal Lake Central is coming off a season in which the Tigers came within one shot as a team of making it to the state tournament. Tigers coach Mike Hermann said it is an interesting time for his team after losing three players from last season.

“It’s a little bit unsure, I’m curious how this year’s group is going to do,” Hermann said. “In the springtime, I pointed out some of the stats and where our current stats are if we didn’t improve. If we didn’t improve, we would be in the middle of the pack. I challenged them to play a lot this summer, and now it’s time to see if they have put in that improvement.”

Outside of the FVC, keep an eye on Marian Central, led by junior Luke Waggoner. The Hurricanes qualified as a team for sectionals last season.
