CLS starts 1-1 at volleyball invitational

PLAINFIELD – Crystal Lake South’s girls volleyball team split a pair of matches Friday at the Plainfield North Invitational, losing, 25-21, 25-23, to Rosary in the first match, and defeating Oswego East in the second match, 25-20, 25-12.

Hannah Burkle led the Gators (2-1) in kills in both matches with nine against Rosary and 12 against Oswego East.

“Hannah is definitely coming into her own as a senior,” South coach Jorie Fontana said. “Defenses have to work around her. She is really shining in her new spotlight role.”

Emmy Oraham led the Gators in assists with 11 and 14 in the two matches. Nikki Papadas had six digs against Rosary, and Maureen Johnson delivered four blocks against Oswego East.

The tournament continues today.

BOYS SOCCER

Rockford Auburn Tournament: Marian Central (3-0) has yet to allow a goal this season and remained undefeated Friday after the first day of the tournament.

“We have a solid team,” Hurricanes coach Kristian Rockall said. “We have a pair of great center backs that keep teams from scoring, and we create a lot of offense up front with corner kicks.”

The Hurricanes defeated Rockford East, 9-0, behind a three-goal effort from Zack Radwanski in their first match, and defeated Dixon, 5-0, in their second match, with Filip Dyminski, Forrest Beck, Anthony Myers, Nick Pierce and Austin Sierakowski each adding a goal apiece.

Woodstock (1-1-1) tied Rochelle, 2-2, in their first match with Silma Martinez scoring both goals. Harlem beat Woodstock, 3-0.

The tournament continues today. Marian will play Rockford Christian Life, and Woodstock will play Rock Island.

CL South Invitational: Round Lake improved to 3-0 defeating Crystal Lake South, 1-0.
Jordi Rubio scored in the second half to give the Panthers the win. South’s record fell to 1-1.

BOYS GOLF

Grant Quadrangular: At Antioch, Richmond-Burton’s Andrew Duchaine shot a 41 to lead the Rockets, who finished fourth at Antioch Golf Course.

R-B’s Zach Emken shot a 44, and Matt Swanson and Nate Karpinski shot 49s.
