


South rolls to tennis crownNORTHWEST HERALD SCHAUMBURG – Crystal Lake South’s girls tennis team benefited from the strong play of its singles players and doubles teams to win the Schaumburg Saxon Invitational on Saturday. Marisa Thome at No. 1 singles, Kim Goodwin at No. 2 singles, Abbey Kolarczyk and Rachel Siemon at No. 1 doubles, and Brittany Pittas and Kamile Udrenaite at No. 3 doubles finished undefeated Saturday to help the Gators. “We played excellent today,” Gators coach Don Nead said. “[Thome and Goodwin] took first in singles, and [Kolarczyk and Siemon] controlled the net and played well together to take first in doubles.” Kolarczyk and Siemon are 4-0 at No. 1 doubles. Kelsey Laktash and Julia Thome finished 2-1 to take second at No. 2 doubles. Chicago Christian Invitational: At Palos Heights, Marian Central lost to the host school, 5-0. Belvidere North Invitational: At Belvidere, Woodstock North lost to Keith School, 3-2, Huntley, 4-1, and Belvidere North, 3-2, but Almundena Garcia finished undefeated at No. 1 singles for the Thunder. She defeated Krisha Singson of Keith School, 6-4, 2-6, 10-6, Kayla Garcia of Huntley, 6-0, 6-1, and Caitlan Fritzgerazy of Belvidere North, 6-3, 6-1. Huntley finished second, defeating Belvidere North and Woodstock North. United Township Invitational: At East Moline, Hampshire (0-5) lost three matches, including a 3-1 loss to Sterling, a 3-1 loss to United Township, and a 4-0 loss to Geneseo. Hampshire’s Stacy Krach and Kendall Walker won at No. 1 doubles against Sterling to finish 1-2 at the tournament, and Emily Moser and Taylor Zilch won at No. 2 doubles against United Township to finish 1-2, as well. Johnsburg/McHenry Invitational: Johnsburg’s Alexa Stroner and Lauren DeStephano won the No. 1 and No. 2 singles titles to lead the Skyhawks (26 points) to the team title. McHenry finished third with 19 points. Jacobs Golden Eagles’ Invitational: At Jacobs, Jacobs took first place overall with 42 points as the host of an eight-team invite. The Golden Eagles’ Sydney Nowak placed second in No. 1 singles, and Alina Zabolotico took second in No. 2 singles. Jacobs’ No. 1 doubles team, Marcilyn Rowan and Lauren Steinkamp, placed second, as well.
Plainfield North Tournament: At Plainfield, Huntley rode a 4-1 tournament record to third place, defeating Joliet, 25-9, 24-18, and Plainfield North, 25-17, 25-6. The Red Raiders’ lone loss came against Hinsdale South, 25-23, 21-25, 21-25. Sam Boesch had 16 kills in the three matches for Huntley (5-1). Crystal Lake South finished seventh, defeating Lincoln Way North, 20-25, 28-26, 25-10, and Naperville North, 27-25, 23-25, 25-19. The Gators (4-2) stumbled against St. Charles North, losing, 19-25, 19-25, despite Nikki Papadas’ six aces and Maureen Johnson’s eight kills. Wheaton North Blue & Gold Classic: At Wheaton, Marian Central recovered from a first-set loss to capture the tournament title against St. Viator, winning, 10-25, 25-20, 25-19. The Hurricanes advanced to the title match by beating Glenbard West, 25-15, 25-23.
