Athlete of the Week: CHRIS FEDERIGHI (Cary-Grove, sr.)

Federighi went 3-0 at the Hersey Invitational on Saturday to improve his record to 9-0 on the year.

Noteworthy

FVC Competition: Early season results show that the race for the Fox Valley Conference team championship does not look like any team is ready to run away from the pack. Crystal Lake South improved to 4-0, by defeating Dundee-Crown, 7-0, on Tuesday, but the Chargers sent five matches to three sets, including every doubles match.

The rest of the top teams have been beating up on each other. Prairie Ridge defeated Crystal Lake Central, 4-3, but lost to Grayslake Central by the same score. Cary-Grove has three conference wins including Jacobs, but dropped matches to the Wolves and Gators. The Tigers also lost to the Gators, but got a big 4-3 win Tuesday against Grayslake Central.

Tigers coach Kerry Parrish said her team seemed relaxed Tuesday against the Rams after seeing them at the Elk Grove Invite on Saturday. Grayslake Central won that invitational with 24 points to Crystal Lake Central’s 16.

“We just saw them at a tournament on Saturday and they beat us,” Parrish said. “It was awesome for us [Tuesday].”

No home for Warriors: Just like the girls tennis season, McHenry will play all of its matches away because of the poor condition of the courts at its West Campus. Warriors’ coach Kyle Funkhouser said the resurfacing has been approved but likely will not get done in time to be of any benefit during the season.

Two of the top singles players in the FVC in Federighi and the Ram’s Mitch Granger square off in conference dual. Granger won the Elk Grove Invite on Saturday and is a ranked USTA player. Federighi finished in the top 17 at state last year.
