Boys Athlete
of the Week

Carey Nolan

McHenry, sr.

Nolan won three events April 11 at a quadrangular meet hosted by Prairie Ridge with Fox Valley Conference teams.

He went 42 feet, 71⁄2 inches to win the triple jump, and won the 100-meter dash in 10.8 seconds and the 400 in 51.0.

Nolan did not run Saturday at the Geneva Invitational because the event was canceled because of cold, wet weather, but he will be a big factor for the Warriors at the McHenry County Track and Field Meet on Wednesday and Thursday.

Girls Athlete
of the Week

Laura D’Angelo

McHenry, so.

D’Angelo won three events Thursday at McHenry’s Bob Ludwigsen Invitational at McCracken Field to help the Warriors win the meet with 861⁄2 points.

D’Angelo swept the three sprint races. She won the 100 in 12.8 seconds, the 200 in 27.7 and the 400 in 1:02.2 on a cold, windy night.

Noteworthy

All accounted for: The McHenry County Track and Field Meet is unique in that it is the only competition in which all 15 McHenry County schools participate for both boys and girls.

The meet is a two-day event, with Crystal Lake Central hosting the first day because it has the facilities to handle field events best, and it has the capability of moving indoors in case of inclement weather. Field events start at 4 p.m. Wednesday and should finish that night. Running preliminary heats in the 100, 200 and high hurdles will also be run Wednesday.

The running finals will start at
5 p.m. Thursday at Cary-Grove’s Al Bohrer Field.

Events to watch: Both high-jump competitions could be exciting, although cold and wind could hamper the jumpers. McHenry’s Ashley Conway and Cary-Grove’s Carly Loeffel are capable of breaking Conway’s record of 5-7.

In the boys high jump, C-G’s Anthony Golowach and Woodstock’s Eddie Grogg both have cleared 6-6.

The boys’ 800 race should be good with Crystal Lake Central’s Mike Bondi, Marengo’s Joe Janssen, Crystal Lake South’s Matt Biederwolf and Jacobs’ Joey Cieniewicz. All four went to the IHSA Boys Track and Field State Meet last year, with Bondi taking fourth and Janssen ninth in the Class 2A race.

Most likely to fall: There are a few records that might get broken without exchanging hands. Woodstock senior Kayla Beattie will chase her own marks in the 3,200 (10:43.06) and 1,600 (5:04.64).

McHenry pole vaulter Corey Szamlewski has cleared 15-6 and will be trying to extend his own record (14-41⁄4) in that event.

Three in a row? McHenry’s boys team and C-G’s girls team are both shooting for their third consecutive county titles. The C-G girls are strong and deep and will be hard to knock off.

McHenry’s boys are led by Nolan and Szamlewski and have several other key returning athletes, but Crystal Lake Central might make a run at the Warriors. Central lost by one point last year.
