


Marian shuts down IndiansWOODSTOCK – Lincoln Herendeen was in control on the mound for Marian Central on Monday, striking out 14 and walking only one Marengo batter to pace the Hurricanes in a 2-0 non-conference victory. The Hurricanes (7-3) scored two runs in the third inning. Marian coach Gregg Wikierak said Herendeen had been struggling with finding the strike zone and went into the game trying to pitch in control. “[Herendeen] slowed himself down today,” Wikierak said. “He had a nice pace and a nice rhythm. That was his main focus today: To get ahead of hitters.” Also for the Hurricanes, Mitch Ennis had an RBI and Steve Zubrzycki was 2 for 3. David Diedrick struck out three and gave up one earned run for the Indians (3-13). Cary-Grove 12, Woodstock 0: At Woodstock, Nick Martin threw a five-inning shutout and doubled to lead the Gators (10-4 overall, 6-3 FVC Valley) to an FVC win. Ryan Leonard doubled for the Blue Streaks (4-8, 3-3 FVC Fox). CL Central 11, Grayslake North 2: At Crystal Lake, Dan Leverenz drove in four runs for the Tigers in an FVC Fox Division win. Nate Pollock doubled and drove in a run for Central (8-9, 4-5 FVC Fox). Jacobs 17, Woodstock North 1 (5 inn.): At Algonquin, Mark Self homered twice and collected three RBIs, Brett Kale was 4 for 4 with two doubles and four RBIs, and Kevin Hubner went 2 for 3 with three RBIs in the Golden Eagles’ FVC win against the Thunder (4-9, 0-8 FVC Fox). Nate Andersen earned the victory the win, giving up three hits in five innings for Jacobs (4-10, 3-7 FVC Valley). Huntley 4, Prairie Ridge 1: At Huntley, Jake Staab had seven strikeouts in a complete-game win for the Red Raiders (14-1, 9-0 FVC Valley). Nick Corpolongo (2 for 4) drove in two runs, and Nick Bralich and Colin Lyman each had an RBI. Kyle Hodorowicz (1 for 3) doubled for the Wolves (4-11, 1-5 FVC Fox). Grayslake Central 5, Cary-Grove 2: At Cary, Austin Miller drove in Jon Gurchak and Ryan Hamrick to break open a tie game in the top of the seventh, and the Rams (10-5, 5-3 FVC Fox) held on for the FVC win. C-G’s Alex Posey was 2 for 3 with an RBI for the Trojans (10-7, 7-4 FVC Valley). Hampshire 5, Burlington Central 3: At Burlington, Tyler Crater was 3 for 3 and struck out the Rockets’ Sam Klein in the bottom of the seventh inning with runners on second and third to earn the save for the Whip-Purs in a Big Northern Conference East Division game. Also for Hampshire (10-5, 3-1 BNC East), Chase Lundry doubled and drove in a run. Wauconda 3, Richmond-Burton 2: At Wauconda, the Bulldogs (11-5) rallied for three runs in the final two innings to overcome a 2-0 deficit and defeat the Rockets in non-conference play. C.J. Daniels was 2 for 3 with a double, and Parker Johnston had two RBIs for R-B (11-4). Alden-Hebron 7, Williams Bay (Wis.) 4: At Williams Bay, Wis., Shane Engelbrecht homered, doubled and drove in four runs for the Giants (8-7) in a non-conference win. Also for A-H (8-7), sophomore Joe Manata (2-0) struck out 11 to earn the victory. TENNIS CL South 5, CL Central 2: At Crystal Lake, Cam Laktash beat Tommy Nelson, 6-3, 4-6, 6-2, in a No. 1 singles match that finished indoors because of rain to help the Gators beat host Central in FVC action. McHenry 6, Woodstock North 1: At Woodstock, Dylan Clark won at No. 1 singles for the Warriors in an FVC win. Mitch Laabs won at No. 3 singles for the Thunder. TRACK AND FIELD Grayslake North Triangular: Creighton Masters won the triple jump (39 feet, 6 inches), long jump (18-71⁄2) and the 110-meter high hurdles to lead Jacobs to a team win with 79 points. Jake Szramiek won the pole vault (11-6) for Johnsburg, which placed third (17) behind the host Knights (72). Crystal Lake South Triangular: At Crystal Lake, McHenry won with 69 points, South finished second (56) and Huntley came in third (50). McHenry sophomore Gilbert Matias won the 110 high hurdles (15.9 seconds) and finished second in the high jump (5-6) and teammate Austin Ives won the long jump (18-93⁄4), the high jump (6-0), and the 300 intermediate hurdles (43.7). Huntley’s James Davis won the 100 (10.9) and 400 (52.3). South’s Andrew Hubbard won the 1,600 (4:47.5), Kyle Enos won the discus (128-5), and Austin Geallis won the triple jump (37-8). CL Central quadrangular: At Crystal Lake, the host Tigers racked up 1131⁄2 points to take first at the four-team meet of FVC teams. Cary-Grove (58) was second, Dundee-Crown (45) was third and Prairie Ridge (391⁄2) was fourth. Central’s Dyllon McKinney (40.4) edged D-C’s Max Kittle (40.6) in the 300 intermediate hurdles in one of the meet’s best races.
