CL South takes own tennis tourney title

CRYSTAL LAKE – Crystal Lake South continued to roll in boys tennis, winning its own eight-team invitational Saturday.

Cam Laktash dominated for the Gators, defeating opponents from Rolling Meadows, Elgin, Schaumburg and Wheaton North to win the singles championship. Laktash won each of his matches in straight sets, but was challenged by Schaumburg’s Isriz Balase in a 6-4, 7-5 win.

Nick Zelasko and Alex Zelasko won three matches on the day and took third place in doubles. The Zelasko brothers defeated Fremd and two teams from Elgin but lost to Wheaton North.

Also for South, Michael Viola won one match in singles and Ryan Kinross and Adam Kay won two matches in doubles.

Huntley Triangular: At Huntley, Mahi Islam and Connor Smith won both of their singles matches for the Red Raiders (6-8) as Huntley topped Round Lake, 5-2, and Grant, 3-2.

BASEBALL

Prairie Ridge 16, Woodstock 0 (5 inn.): At Woodstock, Kyle Hodorowicz and Nick Samuels combined for six hits and five RBIs to lead the Wolves (6-13, 3-7 FVC) past Woodstock in FVC Fox play.

Jordan Turner and Joe Hunt had hits for the Blue Streaks (4-12, 3-7), and Zack Coel picked up the win.

Huntley 10, Grayslake North 2: At Grayslake, walking one batter and striking out five, Jake Staab (5-0) earned the win for the Red Raiders (16-2, 11-1 FVC Valley) with help from Nick Corpolongo, who pounded out four hits and drove in a run in FVC action.

Kevin Staszczak went 3 for 4 for Grayslake North (5-14, 4-9 FVC Fox).

Grayslake Central 22, Dundee-Crown 2 (5 inn.): At Grayslake, Dylan Kissack doubled and drove in two runs for the Chargers (13-10, 9-5 FVC Valley) in an FVC loss. Mark Ash got the win and hit a three-run homer for the Rams (12-7, 6-4 FVC Fox).

DeKalb 6, Hampshire 4: At DeKalb, Dylan Nihells went 3 for 3, scored two runs and drove in two for the Whip-Purs (10-6) in a non-conference loss.

Richmond-Burton 5-4, Rockford Lutheran 3-1: At Rockford, Donnie Stupienski (2-0) and Casey Williams (1-0) picked up wins as the Rockets swept Rockford Lutheran in BNC crossover play.

Travis Jewell knocked in two runs with two hits in Game 2 for R-B (14-4).

McHenry 6, Woodstock North 0: At McHenry, Chase Matheson drove in two Warrior runners to give Matthew Banks (3-0) the win against Woodstock North (4-12, 0-12 FVC Fox) in FVC baseball.

Pat Murphy and Jake Poulos also recorded RBIs for McHenry (14-7, 13-2 FVC Valley).

Larkin 2, Jacobs 1: At Algonquin, with an RBI double in the fourth inning Henry Gigeous provided run support for pitcher Joe Ross, who recorded 10 strikeouts, but Jacobs (6-11) lost in non-conference play.

Alden-Hebron 14, Christian Liberty 4 (5 inn.): At Hebron, Shane Engelbrecht struck out eight and allowed no earned runs to lead Alden-Hebron (9-9, 2-4) to a Northeastern Athletic Conference win.

Sophomore Tim Talbert drove in two runs for the Giants.

North Boone 4, Marengo 1: At Poplar Grove, Jake Wajda drove in a run for the Indians in a BNC East loss.

Burlington Central 14, Marengo 0 (5 inn.): At Burlington, Ryan Hoff’s single in the fourth inning was the only hit for the Indians (3-15, 1-3) in a BNC East loss.

TRACK

Art Carlson Track Classic: At Oregon, T.J. Scott was third in the long jump (19 feet, 81⁄2 inches) and Jeff Taylor was third in the triple jump (41-61⁄2) to lead Woodstock North in a 13th place finish with 16 points at the 24 team invitational.

Jarrett McCardle was 11th in the shot put (38-0) and 12th in the discus (117-9) for Hampshire, which did not score.

Winnebago won the meet with 101 points.
