


D-C avenges loss to Grayslake CentralCARPENTERSVILLE – After losing to Grayslake Central, 22-2, on Saturday, Dundee-Crown bounced back Tuesday to defeat the Rams, 3-2, in Fox Valley Conference baseball action. D-C allowed a run in the top of the fifth inning to go down, 2-1, but the Chargers (13-10 overall, 10-5 FVC Valley Division) scored two in the bottom frame to take the lead. Jake Romano drove in the tying run with one out and Dylan Kissack doubled with two outs to drive in the lead run. “We were just trying to get something going in the fifth,” Chargers coach Jon Sawyer said. “Jake and Dylan were able to come out with two key hits. We hadn’t had a two-out hit all day.” The Rams (12-8, 6-5 FVC Fox) loaded the bases with one out in the top of the seventh, but D-C shortstop Steve Schwartz leaped to snag a line drive and flipped to second for a game-ending double play. Mike Lodi struck out five and allowed one earned run to get the win for the Chargers. CL South 7, Johnsburg 1: At Crystal Lake, Max Meitzler homered for the Gators (14-4, 10-3 FVC Valley) in an FVC win. Zack Miller picked up the only hit for the Skyhawks (4-14, 1-9 FVC Fox). Cary-Grove 12, CL Central 2 (5 inn.): At Cary, the Trojans powered past the Tigers (8-12, 4-7 FVC Fox), thanks to two home runs each from Alex Posey, who had four RBIs, and Mike Vilardo, who had three RBIs. Kevin Weber (3-0) picked up the FVC win for C-G (14-7, 12-4 FVC Valley). McHenry 10, Woodstock North 0 (5 inn.): At Woodstock, Pat Maher issued eight strikeouts and allowed just one Thunder hit in the Warriors’ FVC shutout win. Cody Freund went 2 for 2, driving in two runs for McHenry (15-7, 14-2). James Quick doubled for the Thunder (4-13, 0-12 FVC Fox). Huntley 15, Grayslake North 0 (5 inn.): At Huntley, Colin Lyman homered for the Red Raiders in an FVC win against the Knights (5-15, 4-10 FVC Fox). Also for Huntley (17-2, 12-1 FVC Valley), Bryan Doherty (4-0) struck out seven in the win. Jacobs 12, Lake Zurich 3: At Lake Zurich, Greg Mixon did not give up an earned run in the Golden Eagles’ non-conference win. Mark Self doubled and scored two runs for Jacobs (7-11). Richmond-Burton 7, Gurnee Warren 5: At Richmond, senior C.J. Daniels hit a two-run home run in the first inning, supporting sophomore pitcher Matt Malecki (2-1) for the non-conference win for the Rockets (15-4). Montini, 8, Marian Central 4: At Woodstock, the Hurricanes (8-4, 4-3 SCC) rallied, scoring three runs in the seventh inning behind two hits and an RBI from Brett Kosar but couldn’t catch Montini in SCC baseball.
CL South 6, McHenry 1: At Crystal Lake, Cam Laktash, Nick Zelasko and Jimmy Uvodich swept singles play for the Gators in an FVC win to help South preserve its perfect 9-0 conference record. Dave Robinson and Jake Romme won at No. 1 doubles for the Warriors. CL Central 4, Dundee-Crown 3: At Carpentersville, Conor Cornelius and Brad Cullian won their third set tiebreaker at No. 3 doubles to help the Tigers edge the Chargers in the completion of an FVC dual from April 26. Joe Aschacher and Eric Martin won their third set tiebreaker to get the win at No. 1 doubles for D-C. Grayslake Central 7, Huntley 0: At Grayslake, the Rams’ Mitch Granger defeated Huntley’s Chris Clavero at No. 1 singles to lead Grayslake Central to the FVC win. Grayslake North 5, Woodstock North 2: At Woodstock, Mitch Laabs won at No. 3 singles and Luke Versten and Jeremy Abney won at No. 1 doubles for the Thunder in an FVC loss. Wheaton Academy 4, Marian Central 1: At Wheaton, Aaron Waters and Conor Moon won at No. 1 doubles for the Hurricanes in a non-conference loss. IMSA 5, Hampshire 2: At Aurora, Christian DelaCruz won at No. 1 singles for the Whip-Purs in a non-conference loss. Grant 4, Marengo 2: At Marengo, Tyler VanVorhees won at No. 1 singles, 6-1, 6-3, but the Indians lost in non-conference action. Johnsburg 5, Round Lake 2: At Johnsburg, the Skyhawks swept their doubles matches, led by Kevin Wells and Jack Schneider, who won 6-1, 6-1, at No. 1 doubles.
CL Central Triangular: At Crystal Lake, Crystal Lake Central won 13 events including the 4x800-meter relay (8:26.6) and collected 100.5 team points to defeat Crystal Lake South (59 points) and Woodstock (23.5). The Gators won the 4x100 relay (47.3 seconds) and the 4x400 relay (3:56.4), while the Blue Streaks finished second in the 4x200 relay (1:33.2). McHenry Triangular: At McHenry, the Warriors won three relays – the 4x800, the 4x100 and the 4x400 – and Corey Szamlewski won the pole vault (15-3) and the 100-meter dash (11.2) en route to winning their own triangular with 80 points. Szamlewski’s vault was his best of the outdoor season. Dundee-Crown finished second (59.5) and Grayslake North was third (35.5). Dundee-Crown’s Anthony Manfrin won the 3,200 (9:51), Max Kittle won the 110 high hurdles (15.4) and finished second in the 300 intermediate hurdles (42.8) to McHenry’s Gilbert Matias (42.4). Austin Ives won the high jump (6-0) and the triple jump (40-4) for McHenry. Jacobs Triangular: At Algonquin, Cary-Grove’s Josh Freeman recorded the best discus throw of his career to win at 156-2, but the Trojans came in third in the meet involving three FVC teams. Grayslake Central had 751⁄2 points, Jacobs had 58 and C-G had 351⁄2. Dom Blake won the 300 intermediate hurdles for Jacobs. Woodstock North Quadrangular: Joe Campbell won the 100 meter high hurdles (10.9) and 300 intermediate hurdles (42.0) for Prairie Ridge, which won the team title with 91 points. James Davis won the 100 (10.9), 400 (50.7) and 200 (22.7) for Huntley in a second-place team finish with 88. Jeff Taylor won the high jump (6-0) and triple jump (40-0) for Woodstock North which finished third (65).
