C-G knocks off Huntley, clinches share of FVC Valley softball title

HUNTLEY – Sophomore Lindsay Efflandt picked up her 19th win of the season – her most important yet – as Cary-Grove clinched at least a share of the Fox Valley Conference Valley Division softball title Monday with a 10-6 win against Huntley.

“[Efflandt] has done a tremendous job and kept her composure,” Trojans coach Tammy Olson said. “There’s a real sense of accomplishment.”

Supporting Efflandt’s eight-strikeout performance was an onslaught of hits by C-G (21-1, 11-0 FVC Valley), including a combined six hits and four RBIs from freshman Lisa Semro and senior Emma Gaulke.

“What was really neat today was that every girl in the lineup had either an RBI or a run scored,” Olson said. “We want to really continue to have that team effort all the way.”

Huntley (11-11, 6-4) battled back with four runs in the fifth on two Trojans errors but couldn’t catch C-G. Senior Kelsey Hagan and freshman Angela Tribuzzio homered for the Red Raiders.

CL Central 11, Grayslake North 8: At Crystal Lake, Brittany York doubled and drove in three runs for the Tigers in an FVC Fox Division win.

Also for Central (17-5, 10-2), Taylor Ward threw 11⁄3 innings of no-hit ball to get the win.

McHenry 9, Dundee-Crown 4: At McHenry, Sara Wegner gave up one more hit (13) than D-C pitcher Melany Love, but still earned the FVC Valley win for McHenry (6-9, 4-7) against the Chargers (2-18, 1-12).

Grayslake Central 14, Woodstock 4 (5 inn.): At Grayslake, Rachel Parisek drove in two runs for the Blue Streaks (0-18, 0-12 FVC Fox) in an FVC Fox Division loss to the Rams (9-13, 5-8).

Johnsburg 2, Woodstock North 1 (8 inn.): At Woodstock, freshman Kendall Huemann did not give up an earned run in eight innings to earn the win for the Skyhawks (7-8, 3-9) in an FVC Fox game.

Paige Bush went 2 for 4 for the Thunder (5-14, 3-9).

Oak Forest 1, Marengo 0: At Oak Forest, Reed Karsten went 2 for 2 for the Indians (15-4), who gave up a run in the bottom of the seventh inning in the non-conference loss to the Bengals (17-3).

Genoa-Kingston 18, Harvard 5 (5 inn.): At Harvard, Micheala Binz drove in three runs for the Hornets (12-7) in a Big Northern Conference crossover loss.

Guerin 3, Marian Central 2: At River Grove, Lexi Kacena had two doubles and drove in a run for the Hurricanes (4-12) in a Suburban Christian Conference crossover loss.

SOCCER

Dundee-Crown 2, Prairie Ridge 1: At Carpentersville, Stephanie Letheby and Mallory Fryer each scored a goal in the first half, taking advantage of the Wolves’ miscommunication on defense, to lead the Chargers (7-14, 6-6 FVC Valley) in the FVC win.

Jessica Flores, on an assist by Bri Fenton, had the only goal for the Wolves (5-9-1, 5-5 FVC Fox).

Jacobs 3, Woodstock North 0: At Woodstock, Catie Sherman scored seven minutes after Mel Duda’s first goal for the FVC win for Jacobs (17-5, 8-1 FVC Valley) over Woodstock North (6-12-1, 2-9 FVC Fox).

Carmel 3, Marian Central 0: At Mundelein, the Hurricanes (13-8) lost a non-conference game.
