FVC preview: The Fox Valley Conferernce team title is up for grabs heading into the conference tournament Friday and Saturday. Crystal Lake South has a slight advantage over Grayslake Central with both teams entering the tournament with one loss. South leads in points, but has lost to the Rams in a dual meet. Also in the mix are Prairie Ridge and Crystal Lake Central, each with two losses. The Wolves defeated the crosstown Tigers, 4-3, but lost to South and Grayslake Central, 4-3, in both matches. The Tigers defeated Grayslake Central but lost to the Gators.

After losing seven of 11 players from last year’s varsity squad, Gators coach Don Nead said he is just happy to be in contention much less the leader. Nead said the FVC team title still is up for grabs with any of four or five teams still in contention.

One of South’s returning varsity players is No. 1 singles player Cam Laktash who said all of the returning players did not expect the team to be this good.

“Everyone is surprised by how well we’re doing,” Laktash said. “Our returning starters didn’t think we’d be where we are.”

In No. 1 singles, Cary-Grove’s Chris Federighi and Grayslake Central’s Mitch Granger look to be headed for a rematch in the finals. Granger won the first meeting and is undefeated in conference play. Federighi is looking to avenge his only conference loss in the past two seasons.
