Athlete of the week

Aimee Wronski

Huntley, sr.

Wronski, a forward, secured the Red Raiders’ fifth consecutive Fox Valley Conference Valley or Fox Division title last Thursday with a pair of goals against Jacobs. She also scored twice in the Raiders’ Class 3A Rockford Jefferson Regional semifinal win against Larkin on Tuesday.

The second goal against the Royals put Wronski one goal shy of 100 in her four-year career. She has scored an area-best 32 goals this season.

Noteworthy

Back in action: Huntley senior defender Alyse Williams could return to the field this week, Huntley coach Kris Grabner said after last week’s match against Jacobs.

Williams has been sidelined with a minor injury to her meniscus, Grabner said. It happened during overtime of the Raiders’ FVC victory against McHenry on April 12. She did not attempt to come back during the regular season, opting to rest for the postseason.

The Raiders play for an IHSA Class 3A regional title against No. 2 seed DeKalb at 4:30 p.m. Friday. In the ESPN Rise weekly national rankings, Huntley remained at No. 6 this week with an 18-1-1 overall record.

Playing on turf: Sometimes teams struggle adjusting to playing on turf after spending the season playing on grass, but Jacobs coach Anthony Cappello was pleased because Barrington’s field is just as wide as the Golden Eagles’, and there was plenty of room to run against Cary-Grove on Wednesday.

“It’s nice coming to the turf, especially one with so much width as this one,” Cappello said.
