Marengo softball dominates Whips

HAMPSHIRE – A five-inning, 17-1 semifinal victory at the Class 3A Hampshire Regional has Marengo’s softball team feeling good.

Chloe Montgomery pitched a complete game, allowing one run on one hit and striking out eight to lead the top-seeded Indians (27-9) to a victory against the fourth-seeded Whip-Purs (6-18) and a berth in the regional championship at 11 a.m. Saturday.

“We played well,” Indians coach Jim McKinnon said. “We got the bat on the ball, and Chloe pitched a great game. We’re feeling good about moving on to play for the championship.”

Marengo next will play the winner of today’s semifinal between Crystal Lake Central and Marian Central.

Class 4A McHenry Regional: At McHenry, Taylor Dunne, Emma Gaulke and Sarah Leudo each drove in a run as top-seeded Cary-Grove (28-1) won its semifinal, 6-0, against McHenry (9-13).

Lindsay Efflandt (25-1) struck out seven and allowed five hits as C-G won its 25th consecutive game.

Class 4A Huntley Regional: At Huntley, Jenna Teson (4 for 5) and Kelsey Peterson (2 for 4) each hit a triple, Marissa Lombardo struck out seven, and top-seeded Jacobs beat fourth-seeded Dundee-Crown, 11-1, to advance to the final. Lombardo earned the win for Jacobs (20-11) against D-C (2-23).

Class 3A Richmond-Burton Regional: At Richmond, Jessica Kearns pitched 31⁄3 innings and had one strikeout and three walks in R-B’s five-inning, 12-2 semifinal loss to Antioch. Riley Stanton homered for R-B (12-13).

BASEBALL

Dundee-Crown 9, Hampshire 1: At Carpentersville, Nick Spagnola and Steve Schwartz each went 2 for 2, and the Chargers (22-13) beat the Whip-Purs (14-14) in non-conference play.
