WOODSTOCK – Evan Mass checked the MCJGA player standings Monday night and knew he had to play well in the Crystal Woods Open at Crystal Woods Golf Club. The Marian Central graduate was in ninth place, one spot away from qualifying for next week’s Tournament of Champions. He responded with a first-place finish Wednesday in the senior boys division with a 7-over-par 79. “My short game was pretty good and I caught a few breaks,” Mass said. “Off the tee, I was decent at times, but I could have been better.” Mass shot a 37 on the back nine at Marian Central’s home course and said that being familiar with the course helped. The win bumped Mass up to seventh in the point standings. Prairie Ridge’s Kosta Lecos followed Mass with an 81 and Dundee-Crown’s Joe Aschacher took third. Jordan Schoenfeld shot the low score of the day, taking first in the junior boys division with a 78. The Crystal Lake Central freshman wasn’t sure if his score was going to hold, but grew confident that he would get his first win as more and more competitors finished with scores in the 80s. It was the eighth time that the junior boys winner outshot the senior boys winner this season. “There’s a lot of good kids, and they get better each time they play,” Schoenfeld said. Prairie Ridge’s Jerry Pan took second in the junior division with an 80, and Cary’s Daniel DePrey, the junior division points leader, was third with an 81. After a string of bogeys to start, Prairie Ridge’s Delainey Peterson finally found her stroke and won the senior girls division with a 43 over nine holes. “It was just an awkward round. I felt like I should have been shooting way higher than I actually shot,” Peterson said. “The way I was striking the ball was not 100 percent.” Peterson was happy to qualify for the Tournament of Champions after missing the cut last season. Prairie Ridge’s Danielle Roulo, the senior division points leader, took second with a 46 and Amalia Emma took third with a 47. In the junior girls division, Larisa Luloff took first with a 41 and was in first place in the points standings. Bailey Bolster took second in the junior division with a 50 and Brianna DiGrazia took third with a 51. |
