HARVARD – Brothers Jarrett and Justin Kinney have played golf together for a long time.

On Monday at the McHenry County Junior Golf Association Team Event at Oak Grove Golf Course, the brothers from Cary used their unspoken bond to shoot a 2-over-par 73 to win the boys division by three shots over Kosta Lecos and Sam Spangard.

Stuart Buthod and Ryan Jepsen finished seven shots back. Joe Grady and Wyatt Richards, who played with Buthod and Jepsen, shot a 77 but were disqualified after signing an incorrect scorecard.

After shooting 4-over on the first four holes, the Kinneys shot even-par the rest of the way, including three birdies on the back nine where the brothers shot a 34. Justin Kinney said that the team format was an interesting experience.

“It was different on the front nine working as a team, and I think on the back nine, we really worked as a team to get the birdies, and the birdies started to come instead of pars,” Justin Kinney said.

He added it was good to be able to use the best of each other’s games.

“It was nice being able to utilize both of our strengths,”Justin Kinney said. “We both play very differently. If [Jarrett] hit it out, I was there to make the par, and if I hit it out, he would go and make birdie or par. It was nice having that backup.”

In the girls division, Prairie Ridge teammates Delainey Peterson and Danielle Roulo shot a 37 to win by 11 strokes over Ann Bandolik and Megan Reddersdorf. Peterson and Roulo said they definitely benefited from the team format.

“My putting was bad today, and [Roulo’s] putting was actually pretty good today,” Peterson said.

“She [Peterson’s] good with chipping and I’m not, so we played off each other,” Roulo said.

The two added that having a partner added more pressure.

“I didn’t think it was going to be a lot of pressure because it’s like, ‘we’re just going out here’ but the putts and some of the shots I had to make were a bit scary,” Peterson said.

The MCJGA season concludes today with the Tournament of Champions at Woodstock Country Club. Jarrett Kinney along with Peterson and Roulo will be participating in the event.
