Boys Athlete
of the Week

Dan Fox

Johnsburg, sr.

Fox grabbed fourth place at the Crystal Lake South Invitational on Saturday at Veteran Acres Park, covering the 3.1-mile course in 17:20.3.

Fox said he ran about 750 miles this summer, more than he ever trained before, and he is off to a fast start. He finished third in the McHenry County Meet the previous week.

Fox will miss the Wauconda Invitational this week because he will be taking the SAT.

Girls Athlete
of the Week

Kelly Meehleib

Huntley, freshman

Meehleib quickly has established herself as one of the top rookies in the area this season.

Meehleib took third in the Crystal Lake South Invitational on Saturday at Veteran Acres Park in 21:02.4 over the 3.1-mile course. In the previous week, she took fifth in the McHenry County Meet.

Meehleib led her team to second place in the meet with 93 points. Defending IHSA Class 1A state champion Decatur St. Teresa won the team title with 32 points.

Red Raiders coach Brad Gallaugher said Meehleib still was working on tactical strategy with racing in high school and believed that she was only going to get better.

Noteworthy

Warriors look strong: McHenry’s boys team took third as a team in the South Invitational with 70 points, finishing behind two-time Class 2A defending state champion Belvidere North (32) and Rolling Meadows (51).

Warriors coach Jim Wheeler said he liked what he saw, but said he believed his team could get better.

“Our first five are running very well, but we’re still kind of searching for the No. 5,” Wheeler said. “We’ve been running our younger kids down, but I have some ideas.”

Wheeler said he thought some of the younger runners on varsity would make the lineup stronger. Calvin Quarterman (fifth), Tay Tomal (eighth) and Bryan Wyszynski (10th) were in the top 10 for the Warriors.
