Jacobs’ depth shows with Woodstock titleJacobs established itself as the girls swimming team to beat in the Fox Valley Conference with Saturday’s performance at the Woodstock Invitational. The Golden Eagles took first place with 569 points, more than 100 points ahead of second-place Crystal Lake Central. Six of the seven FVC schools competed, with Dundee-Crown the lone exception. With only two individual wins and a medley relay win, the team championship was evidence of Jacobs’ depth. In six individual races, the Golden Eagles placed two swimmers in the top five. Top to bottom, the conference seems to be more competitive this season, with only five points separating Cary-Grove, McHenry and Woodstock in third to fifth place, respectively. Woodstock had the most individual titles Saturday with three, while C-G, McHenry and Central won two events. C-G had the most relay wins with two – 200 frosh/soph. medley and 400 frosh/soph. 400 freestyle relay. Flirting with state: McHenry’s Michaela Matthys and Cary-Grove’s Lauren Curtis each swam two events Saturday that put them on track to qualify for state. Matthys’ 1:10.08 in the breaststroke and 1:01.49 in the butterfly are two seconds or less away from the IHSA state qualifying standard. What to swim at sectionals may be a difficult question for Matthys, who also is less than a second away from qualifying in the 50 freestyle. Curtis’ 2:00.66 was about four seconds off the state cut in the 200 freestyle, and her 55.72 in the 100 freestyle was less than two seconds away.
