


Marengo girls, R-B boys win BNC titlesBYRON – Marengo’s girls repeated as team champions, while Richmond-Burton’s boys grabbed their third title in four years at the Big Northern Conference Cross Country Meet on Saturday at Byron Forest Preserve. Marengo, led by BNC repeat individual champion Katie Adams, put its five scoring runners in the top nine for 22 points, well ahead of second-place Rock Falls with 91. R-B’s boys held off Burlington Central with a solid performance throughout its lineup. R-B finished with 63 points to Burlington’s 71. R-B’s Aaron Spivey took third to lead the Rockets to the title. Adams finished the 2.8-mile course in 17:08.17 and Allie Sprague was second in 17:40.00 to lead Marengo’s girls. Lexi Olson (fourth), Kitty Allen (sixth) and Paige Malinowski (ninth) also scored for the Indians. Katie St. Claire (14th) and Claire Cowan (15th) did not count in the scoring, but still earned All-Big Northern Conference honors. R-B coach Keith Forth lauded his team for the way the entire lineup performed. “Mike Bland has been our No. 5 and was No. 3 today,” Forth said. “He really picked us up. We were behind after the first three, but our fourth and fifth guys [Richard Kaht and Ryan Garrett] got it done for us.” Burlington’s Clint Kliem won the race in 14:11.51, with Marengo’s Torben Hoffmeyer taking second in 14:40.92. Suburban Christian Conference Meet: At Aurora, Marian Central’s girls team took fourth behind Emma Baumert’s 15th-place finish. Olivia Dineen was 24th, Brie Baumert was 25th and Caroline Hellman was 29th for Marian. In the boys race, Marian’s Ty Balduf finished 19th to help the Hurricanes finish sixth. Marian’s Tommy Fredrick was 30th.
Marengo 4, CL Central 0: At Hampshire, senior Nick Radcliff scored a hat trick as the Indians (10-6-4) defeated the Tigers (1-18) in their first-round game of the IHSA Class 2A Hampshire Regional. Marengo will play top-seeded Burlington Central in the regional semifinals at 5 p.m. Tuesday. “[This win] should help us get ready for the next step,” Marengo coach Jim McKinnon said. “Burlington is a tough team, and our kids will have to be prepared to play a tough, foot-by-foot game.” Sergio Orozco earned the shutout for Marengo, stopping six shots from Central (1-18), but Radcliff was the hero of the day. “He really works hard,” McKinnon said. “He played tough defense on the backs, stole the ball a couple times, and managed to put in.” Luis Romero also scored for the Indians.
Glenbard East Autumnfest: At Lombard, behind 38 kills from senior outside hitter Katie Hamilton and 65 digs from Nicole Kirchberg, Prairie Ridge (16-17) won two of its five matches to finish ninth in the two-day tournament. Elgin Tournament: At Elgin, Dundee-Crown won two of its five matches, defeating Highland Park and Elgin. Alexa Shemanske had 27 kills for the Chargers. Cori Eischen made 85 assists for D-C (6-22). Woodstock North Invitational: At Woodstock, Lilly Klay had 22 kills, 13 digs and 14 blocks to lead Woodstock North (4-27) to two wins out of five matches in its own tournament.
