Seniors lead McHenry to win in Fox Lake Regional quarterfinal

FOX LAKE – It was a senior showing Monday as the McHenry girls volleyball team looked to its leaders to secure a 25-17, 25-19 win against fifth-seeded Grant in the IHSA Class 4A Fox Lake Regional quarterfinal.

The fourth-seeded Warriors advance to face top-seeded Cary-Grove at 6:30 p.m. today in a regional semifinal at Grant High School.

Senior outside hitter Sam Magnussen led McHenry with 13 kills, supported by seven more kills and nine digs from senior Alyssa Johnson.

Senior Meghan Mortell had two blocks for the Warriors (14-21).

IHSA Class 3A regionals: At Belvidere, fourth-seeded Harvard lost in three games, 23-25, 25-11, 20-25, to fifth-seeded Rockford East in the Belvidere Regional quarterfinals.

Stephanie Stephens had 22 digs, and Carlie Gabrys logged 16 assists for the Indians (4-21).

At Sycamore, fourth-seeded Hampshire defeated fifth-seeded Genoa-Kingston in straight games, 25-15, 25-19, and will play top-seeded Crystal Lake Central in the Sycamore Regional semifinals at 6:30 p.m. today.
