Athlete of the Week

Mackenzi Humm

Prairie Ridge, jr.

Humm, a right side hitter and setter, did a little bit of everything to help the Wolves beat Crystal Lake South on Tuesday in the IHSA Class 4A Grant Regional semifinal. She posted 10 kills, 12 digs and 17 assists in Prairie Ridge’s 21-25, 25-17, 25-19 victory.

Looking ahead

The Wolves advance to the Grant Regional final and face a familiar opponent today. For the fourth time this season, Prairie Ridge and Cary-Grove square off, this time with the season on the line. No. 1 C-G was tested in the last meeting of the teams, losing the first game before rallying to take the next two. Expect another close match at 6 p.m. today.

Richmond-Burton also is hoping the fourth time is the charm. In the Class 3A Marengo Regional final, the second-seeded Rockets play top-seeded Marian Central, against whom R-B is 0-3 this season. The Rockets will rely on attackers Ali Frantti and Kim Russell to counter Marian’s Emma Hussey and Tara Blake. Both teams feature setters equally capable of spreading the ball in Kara Russell and Abby Gilleland. The Hurricanes won each match 2-0.

At Dundee-Crown, top-seeded Huntley needs to take down second-seeded Barrington, a team the Chargers haven’t played this season. They will meet at 6 p.m. today.

Johnsburg’s matches against Grayslake Central have been tightly contested this season, with each team winning a match in three sets. There’s no reason to believe that won’t happen again today as they meet in the Class 3A Johnsburg Regional final at 6 p.m.

In the Class 3A Sycamore Regional, top-seeded Crystal Lake Central will meet the host Spartans, the No. 3 seed, in the final at 6 p.m. today.
