


Records fall as Montini earns 3-peatCHAMPAIGN – Montini quarterback John Rhode and wide receiver Jordan Westerkamp haven’t had the longest relationship, but it’s as solid as it can be in its productivity. Rhode connected with Westerkamp 11 times for 331 yards and five scores – both state title game records – as the Broncos (12-2) won their third consecutive state title with a 70-45 victory Saturday against Joliet Catholic Academy (11-3) in the IHSA Class 5A final. Rhode, who transferred to Montini from Marion Catholic this summer, also hit Joe Borsellino 10 times for 142 yards and Anthony Taylor seven times for 113 yards. Rhode set the all-class title game record for passing yards with 587 and for touchdowns with seven. Rhode’s marks were just the beginning of a banner day for the two teams, who combined to set a handful of records, including Montini’s points scored, Joliet’s yards rushing (587), combined points scored and yards gained (1,634). The Broncos needed nearly every yard of offense to offset Joliet’s Ty Isaac. The junior running back ran for 515 yards on 26 carries and scored six touchdowns. But he had two fumbles in the third quarter that led to two Broncos touchdowns and helped decide the game. Class 7A Boylan 21, Wheaton Warrenville South 14: Lamont Toney threw for 133 yards and a score and rushed for 86 yards and another touchdown, and Boylan hung on to win its second consecutive title with a victory against Wheaton Warrenville South (10-4) in the Class 7A state final. Toney was part of two big plays for the Titans. He snapped off a The Titans finish 14-0, running their winning streak to 28 after capturing the 2010 Class 6A title with an undefeated season. CLASS 8A Bolingbrook 21, Loyola Academy 17: Quarterback Aaron Bailey ran for 174 yards and two touchdowns to lead Bolingbrook to the Class 8A championship, denying Loyola (13-1) its first football state title. Bailey’s 33-yard touchdown run with 5:01 remaining in the fourth quarter rallied Bolingbrook (13-1) from a 17-14 deficit. Bolingbrook, a first-time state champion, held Loyola to 182 yards of total offense. |
