Tigers pin down Chargers
CRYSTAL LAKE – Crystal Lake Central recorded six pins to defeat Dundee-Crown, 48-27, in a Fox Valley Conference crossover meet Friday night. The Chargers (1-2) had four pins of their own, and only three matches lasted the full six minutes. The Tigers’ Brent Pfaff won on a decision at 170 pounds, defeating Deshawn Lloyd, 7-4. It was a big win for Pfaff who was wrestling up a weight class. Pfaff got a takedown in the first period, but Lloyd came back to tie the score, 3-3, heading into the third. Starting in the down position, Pfaff opened the third with a reverse and put Lloyd on his back for a near fall. Pfaff said he was tired at the start of the third, and was just trying to not make any mistakes. “I definitely was tired but that’s what all the practices are for,” Pfaff said. “At that point, I was just trying to work the basics.” Jason Fugiel pinned Kyle Lamprecht in 39 seconds to earn the win at 152 pounds, but still was feeling the sting of losing in the finals of the Conant tournament Saturday. “I had a rough time at Conant,” Fugiel said. “I got really sloppy and lost a match I could have won.” Fugiel said he is working on getting better on his feet, but said he has improved from last season. “I feel like I’m stronger all around,” Fugiel said. “I’m just trying to get better.” Also getting pins for the Tigers (2-0) were Jake Parlberg at 120, Kyle Fugiel (126), Trace Parlberg (132), Clay Lutzow (138) and Gage Harrah (195). Also for Central, Max Enxing won by decision at 160. Central coach Justen Lehr said it was a good match for his team and that even in their losses, the Chargers were competitive. “Dundee-Crown is always going to have kids who come at you,” Lehr said. Despite losing three state champions off last year’s roster, Lehr said the attitude on the team this year is good. “We know things are going to be closer,” Lehr said. “I think this team is pretty tight.” Chargers’ coach Bob Skillman was pleased with the way his younger wrestlers are performing. Jequan Flynn (113), Elijah Velez (145) and Christian Ochoa (220) all won by pin. “Our young guys are doing a nice job,” Skillman said. “They’re improving every week.” Skillman said the strength of his team has been the performances of Jimmy Kuczynski (182), Ray Griggle (285) and Dillon Muscat (138). Griggle, wrestling up a weight class, won by pin at 285 and Kuczynski won by decision. “They’ve been solid,” Skillman said. “All three have been tough. |
