Woodstock wrestlers nip Hampshire

WOODSTOCK – Jon Grell couldn’t have asked for much more from his more inexperienced Woodstock wrestlers Thursday.

Carried by important wins from three first-year wrestlers, the Blue Streaks edged Hampshire, 38-33, for a Fox Valley Conference Fox Division win.

Sophomore Jake Hodery (138 pounds) and freshman Jonathan Michael (220) earned pins for the Blue Streaks (2-9) to supplement experienced returner Stewart Montgomery’s fall at 126 pounds.

First-year senior Ben Deuerling (182) won his match for Woodstock with a major decision, 13-3.

“I’m real happy for the those younger guys who stepped in and filled in the gaps today,” Grell said. “It was pretty fun to watch.”

Senior Tyler Espino (120) picked up Hampshire’s lone pin.

Grayslake Central 54, Woodstock North 22: At Woodstock, Derek Doyen (113 pounds), Ben Brucki (120) and Dillon Klein (170) had pins for the Thunder as Woodstock North took the FVC Fox loss.

Cary-Grove 46, Huntley 21: At Huntley, Mike Cullen (106 pounds), Mike Underwood (132), Matt Fina (138) and Nick Huff (220) picked up pins for the Trojans in the FVC Fox win. Jacob O’Neal (120) and Josh Symbal (195) had pins for Huntley.

McHenry 54, Johnsburg 10: At McHenry, Jake Pait (152 pounds), Luke Krauser (182) and Angel Hernandez (285) had pins for the undefeated Warriors (10-0). Derek Schwanebeck won by major decision, 9-0, for the Skyhawks in the FVC crossover.

Jacobs 53, Prairie Ridge 15: At Algonquin, Austin Ryan (113 pounds), Michael Ricks (138), Jared Mrzlak (170), Gabe DiFecchio (195), Mark Mamola (220) and Sean Buck (285) won by pin for the Golden Eagles (7-6). Zack Synon (132) earned a pin for the Wolves in the FVC Valley win.

Harvard JV Quadrangular: Alden-Hebron’s varsity wrestling team competed against JV teams in the meet. Justin Gricar (132 pounds) and Pat Hooper (285) each collected two pins to lead the Giants (2-5), who defeated Richmond-Burton, 36-18, but lost to Milton (Wis.), 48-18, and to Harvard, 72-5.

BOYS BASKETBALL

South Elgin 46, Jacobs 41: At Algonquin, senior Bobby Mladenovic scored a team-high 11 points, and Alex Glover added nine, but the Golden Eagles (1-4) picked up the non-conference loss.

GIRLS BASKETBALL

Dundee-Crown 52, Elgin 20: At Elgin, Carlin Faulkner scored 18 points and Jackie Jaskowiak added 15 for D-C (5-4) in the non-conference win.

GIRLS BOWLING

Huntley 2,335, McHenry 2,203: At Huntley, Amy Antczak (576 series) and Nikki DeMarco (487) led the way for the Red Raiders. Kim McClaughry (511) and Maggie Johnson (459) led McHenry.

Woodstock 2,189, Johnsburg 2,038: At Johnsburg, Paige Busch (582 series) led all bowlers and was helped by Rachel Zurawski (456) to lead Woodstock in the win. Allison Boelter (457) logged the high series for Johnsburg.
