Athlete of the Week

Amanze Egekeze

Huntley, so.

The 6-foot-61⁄2 sophomore hit 8 of 11 shots and finished with game-highs of 16 points and 12 rebounds as the Red Raiders defeated Crystal Lake Central, 56-35, Wednesday.

The teams had met Dec. 23 in the Jacobs Holiday Classic championship game. Egekeze came through big in that game as well with 21 points and seven rebounds. He scored 12 in a pivotal second-quarter burst.

Egekeze hit shots inside and outside against the Tigers on Wednesday as Huntley moved to 11-1 for the season.

Noteworthy

Scary stat: Huntley is shooting 70.4 percent on free throws this season, a number made even more remarkable since guard Troy Miller, one of the area’s best shooters, is hitting at a 64.4 clip from the line.

Miller was second in the area last season at 88.3 percent. And he is shooting 37.3 percent on three-pointers, but his free-throw stroke has been a bit off.

Sixth man Ryan Craig (81.0) and starters Amanze Egekeze (76.9), Bryce Only (75.5) and Justin Frederick (73.3) all are tearing it up at the line. If Miller starts hitting more consistently, as he is likely to do, the Raiders will be even tougher.
