Athlete of the week

Haylee Nutter

Woodstock North, sr.

Nutter scored a game-high 24 points in Woodstock North’s 51-45 upset victory over Grayslake North on Tuesday. The senior point guard was cool under pressure, knocking down all 10 of her free-throw attempts in the game. Nutter also had 11 points in the Thunder’s 44-41 loss to Grayslake Central on Saturday.

Noteworthy

Settling into the Fox: After winning four consecutive Big Northern Conference East Division championships, Hampshire seems to be doing just fine in its first season as a member of the Fox Valley Conference Fox Division.

The Whip-Purs have reeled off three straight conference victories and now are in third place behind both Grayslake schools with a 4-2 record.

“It’s a little bit more competitive, but that’s the nice thing about moving into the Fox Valley,” Hampshire senior guard Michelle Dumoulin said. “You’ve got a lot more competition, and all around it’s making us a better team.”

Trojans tumble: Cary-Grove’s 46-35 loss to Huntley on Saturday was the Trojans’ first division loss in almost two years. C-G had won 16 consecutive games in the FVC Valley before the Red Raiders upset C-G in Huntley.

The Trojans’ last division loss came Feb. 2, 2010, when Jacobs defeated C-G, 39-37.

Dundee-Crown’s winning ways: The Chargers’ 42-40 victory over Jacobs on Tuesday gave D-C its sixth division victory and clinched its first winning record in the FVC since the 2005-06 season.

D-C is tied atop the FVC Valley standings with C-G at 6-1.

Foul-line success: McHenry’s Emma Romme is one of the area’s best shooters, and when there’s no defender in her face, she’s almost automatic.

Romme leads the area in free-throw percentage this season at 91.7 percent, converting 33 of her 36 attempts this season.

“A majority have been late in the game as we try to close out games with our delay game,” McHenry coach Scott Morris said.

SFlbThis week’s top games

Huntley at Prairie Ridge

7 p.m. Saturday

Huntley tries to rebound from a disappointing effort against McHenry on Tuesday. The Red Raiders need a victory to stay within striking distance of D-C and C-G in the FVC Valley and will have to do a good job defensively on Prairie Ridge’s Haleigh Danek.

SFlbMarengo at Richmond-Burton

7 p.m. Tuesday

The Indians took the first matchup between these two BNC East rivals in early December, 56-53, in Marengo. R-B’s Erin Thomas has been lighting up the scoreboard recently, and she’ll need another big game if the Rockets want to tie the Indians for the division lead.

SFlbCary-Grove at Stevenson

7 p.m. Wednesday

The Trojans will go on the road for their last non-conference game of the regular season and face a tough Stevenson team that just beat Grayslake Central.
