Athlete of the Week

WADE LARDY

McHenry, jr.

Lardy won the Batavia Tournament on Saturday at 138 pounds, improving his record to 21-4. Other than a first-round pin, Lardy needed three decisions to capture the title. In the quarterfinal, Lardy defeated Argo’s Jason Davidson by a 3-1 decision, and in the semifinals he defeated Lemont’s Bobby Bromberek, 9-3. In the finals, Lardy edged Nick Bonomo from Downers Grove North, 5-2. Lardy is ranked No. 10 at 138 in Class 3A by illinoismatmen.com. Bromberek (2A) and Bonomo (3A) have honorable-mention status in the rankings.

Noteworthy

Also at Batavia: McHenry had nine wrestlers place at Batavia, including brothers Mike and Britches Sikula. Mike Sikula (22-5) was second at 113, and Britches (20-6) was third at 106.

Brother power: The area has an abundance or wrestling brother duos this season, including two pairs on the Warriors. In addition to the Sikulas, Jack and Cam Pait have been powerful back-to-back, with Jake wrestling at 152 pounds and Cam at 160. Senior Jake Sikula is 21-8 on the season, and freshman Cam is 14-6 after being moved up to varsity during the season. Both brothers placed at Batavia.

Richmond-Burton brothers Garrett and Grant Sutton each have more than 20 wins this season. With Garrett a sophomore and Grant a freshman, the Suttons should be a force for the Rockets for a long time. Add cousin Cameron Kennedy, and it’s a powerful family for R-B.

Crystal Lake South’s Jake and Nick Peters also belong on the area’s top brothers team. Jake (17-12) and Nick (25-6) are in their last season wrestling together for the Gators, with Jake graduating in the spring.

Other area wrestling brothers include Huntley’s Josh and Trevor Symbal, Jacobs’ Gabe and Matt Difecchio and Marian Central’s Joe and Tom Klinger.
