Beagle out as McHenry’s coach

McHENRY – Tim Beagle, a part of McHenry’s football program at its zenith, has resigned after six seasons as Warriors head coach.

Beagle joined former coach Mike Noll’s staff in 1996 and was part of some of McHenry’s best teams. Beagle took the head coaching job before the 2006 season and resigned to pursue his administrative degree.

Beagle, 38, was 24-32 in his six seasons as head coach. His first two teams stretched McHenry’s amazing playoff run to 20 consecutive seasons, but the Warriors have not qualified in the past four seasons.

“It was a tough decision,” Beagle said. “It’s one of those things where I don’t know if you ever find the right time. I’ll miss football and working with the players. I really enjoyed being on the sideline with the coaches and teaching football.”

Beagle and his wife, Debbie, have three children between the ages of 9 and 6. He started taking classes toward his administrative degree in the fall and hopes to complete that work by the spring of 2013.

“It was pretty grinding [in the fall],” said Beagle, who teaches science at McHenry’s West Campus.

McHenry suffered one of its worst seasons at 1-8 in 2010, but the Warriors bounced back behind quarterback Robert Tonyan to finish 4-5 this season. Beagle graduated from Crystal Lake South in 1991 and played football at Augustana College in Rock Island.

McHenry athletic director Drew Potthoff said the job was posted within District 156.

It also will be posted on websites of the Illinois Athletic Directors Association and of the Illinois High School Football Coaches Association.

Potthoff was uncertain when a new coach might be hired. Potthoff retired after the 2010-11 school year, but is working this year on a part-time basis. He said the district wants a full-time athletic director for next year.

“They’ve received a lot of applicants for that [athletic director] job,” Potthoff said. “With me retired, and since I won’t be here next year, I won’t be involved in hiring the football coach. I think they’d like the new AD to do that.”
