Hornets lose battle of bonus points, dual meet sectional

OREGON – In wrestling duals, sometimes it’s more about how you win or lose than if you win or lose.

Harvard could not get enough bonus points and gave up too many in losing to Lena-Winslow, 36-33, at the Class 1A Oregon Dual Team Sectional on Tuesday.

The Panthers lineup boasted five top-three place winners from Saturday’s IHSA Individual State Tournament.

Lena-Winslow came away with five pins to two for the Hornets, which proved to be the difference.

“They got more extra points than we did,” Harvard coach Tim Haak said. “They have a nice team.”

Starting at 195 pounds, Harvard was down, 12-0, after the first two matches with second-place state placers Logan Staver (195) and Ty Harmston (220) earning pins.

The Hornets looked to get back in the match with a decision by Adam Freimund at 285, a pin by Christian Kramer at 113 and a decision by Chance Shelton at 120 to put them down, 15-12.

Shelton said he was looking for bonus points but his opponent, Ryan Nadig was trying just as hard to avoid them.

“I was going for bonus points for the team in that situation,” Shelton said. “They wanted to keep the match close.”

Not getting to state as a team and failing to place on Saturday at individual state will drive Shelton next season.

“What’s going to get at me most is not placing,” Shelton said. “It’s going to keep me working hard next year.”

Heck did get the extra points from a pin but said he didn’t go into the match just focused on bonus points.

“I just came in like every other match,” Heck said. “I kept with my stuff.”

Haak said he was particularly pleased with the performances of Anthony Luis (106) and Joey Skroko (132). Both lost by decision, but against third place winners at state.

Luis lost, 1-0, to Gunner Wenger in a rematch of the third place state match. At state, Wenger pinned Luis in the first period to take third.

Skroko lost, 5-2, to Austin McPeek and was up, 2-0, after scoring a first period takedown.

Haak said keeping those matches close gave his team a chance.

“We had a lot of guys that had really good matches,” Haak said.

Also winning for Harvard was Brad Lovell at 160. Lovell needed at pin to get the Hornets within 12 with Dan Stott and Nathan Cowan coming up, but came away with an 8-4 decision.

With the match won, the Panthers forfeited to Stott and Cowan.

With just two dual losses this season, Haak said it was a very successful year for his team and was only sorry that the camaraderie and work in the practice room was ending.

“They’ve had a great year,” Haak said. “The only regret is that we don’t get to hang out longer.”
