ATHLETES OF THE WEEK

EVELYN YOUEL
Crystal Lake Central, jr.

JILLIAN WALLACE
Crystal Lake Central, jr.

Youel and Wallace capped a perfect Fox Valley Conference season by winning the FVC tournament Saturday at No. 1 doubles. The Tigers’ top duo lost only five games in their three tournament matches. They likely will be named the top doubles seed in the Cary-Grove Sectional seeding meeting today. On the year, Youel and Wallace are 26-4 overall and 13-0 in FVC duals.

NOTEWORTHY

Sectional seeding: Sectional seeding meetings are today for the three sectionals in which area teams will play. While the top seeds pretty much are sure things at the Cary-Grove, South Elgin and Grayslake North sectionals, securing a lower seed likely could be the determining factor in qualifying for state for some players.

At Cary-Grove, Crystal Lake Central’s Jenna Wallace is undefeated in the FVC and is certain to get the top seed. Belvidere North’s Lindsay Kirkham-Olsen could get the No. 2 seed after winning the Northern Illinois tournament Saturday. Kirkham-Olsen lost in three sets to Wallace at a tournament earlier this season.

Woodstock’s Ana Fedmasu also should get a top-four seed at C-G. If Fedmasu makes it to state, she would be the first Blue Streak to make it since 1999, when Julie Pierscionek qualified in singles and Casey Henry and Sarah Huffer made it in doubles.

Jacobs freshman Ashley Kosy should be the top seed at the South Elgin Sectional, and Huntley’s Kayla Garcia should be slotted No. 2 in singles. In doubles, Megan Elliott and Alina Zabolotico likely will be the top seed.

Grayslake North is where it will get interesting on the seeding front. Lake Forest and Warren almost certainly will take the top seeds in both singles and doubles, but McHenry coach Kyle Funkhouser is hoping to get a fourth seed in singles for Brittany Goebel (19-9).

There is an outside chance the Warriors’ No. 2 singles Lauren Goebel and No. 3 Emily Zalewski, who will move to doubles for sectionals, also could be seeded. They have played several tournaments this season and have one loss in doubles.

With a small amount of similar opponents against the mostly Lake County schools, Funkhouser might need to take an intricate flowchart to the seeding meeting to convince the other coaches of his player’s worth.
