MUNDELEIN – Brianne Fenton’s biggest contribution didn’t make the box score.
Although she scored two points, Prairie Ridge girls basketball coach Rob Baker credited Fenton with the leadership that brought her team a win over Grant, 44-36, in the Mundelein Tournament on Tuesday.
“Fenton was a great leader on the floor for us,” Baker said of his senior guard. “[Grant] played good defense, and forced us into some mistakes, but we continued to play hard.
Senior center Kailey Aldridge scored a team-high 10 points, and junior forward Alex Neckopulos added nine for the Wolves (2-0 overall).
Barrington 56, Jacobs 41: At Barrington, Payton Berg sank three three-pointers and scored 11 points in the nonconference loss for the Golden Eagles (0-1). Jennifer Barnec and Tiffany Frighetto each added eight points.
McHenry 41, Marengo 38: At Marengo, Brittany Avonts (12 points) and Alissa Rosga (10) led the Warriors (1-0) to a nonconference win after trailing, 19-18, at the half. Jessica Villie scored a game-high 13 points, and Lynsey Hoeske downed a pair of three-pointers and added 10 points for the Indians (0-1).
Huntley 67, Bartlett 29: At Huntley, Sam Andrews downed a trio of three-pointers and made all six of her free throws to lead the Red Raiders (1-0) to a nonconference win.
Huntley 3,053, Johnsburg 2,867: At Huntley, Joe Gutka bowled 257 in his third game to bowl the high series, 702, and lead the Red Raiders past Johnsburg. Grant Gardner added 667 pins for Huntley.
Jeff Straulin (657) and Joey Kass (634) bowled the high series for the Skyhawks.
Woodstock Co-op 2,765, Marengo 2,712: At Woodstock, Marengo’s Alex Gross bowled the high game (237) and the high series (660), but it was the Woodstock Co-op’s depth that did them in.
Tyler Stasinopoulos (628) and Austin Luna (573) led for Woodstock.
