WOODSTOCK – The Marian Central girls basketball team opened the season with a bang Thursday.
The Hurricanes scored 23 points in the first quarter to lead to a 63-40 win over Wauconda at the Marian Central Tournament.
Shannon Wuensch scored 23 points to lead Marian (1-0), with five of her six field goals coming from behind the three-point line. Brie Baumart added nine points.
Also at Marian, Richmond-Burton earned its first win of the season, defeating Belvidere, 41-31.
After trailing by seven at half, the Rockets (1-1) held the Bucs to 12 second-half points, including four in the fourth quarter.
Sam Boettjer led R-B with 12 points, with Abby Straight and Andrea Fox both adding eight points. Alex Callanan scored five points, including the Rockets' lone three-pointer, and pulled down seven rebounds and had six steals.
The Hurricanes face the Rockets today at 6:30 p.m.
Vernon Hills Cougar Classic: At Vernon Hills, Woodstock North's comeback fell short, as the Thunder lost to Maine East, 58-51.
The Thunder (1-1) scored 20 points in the final quarter to cut into a 12-point deficit. Ashely Jones, Sam Abbate and Emma Everly all scored nine points for the Thunder, with Aleecia Braun and Sami Ahr both adding eight.
Woodstock North faces host Vernon Hills at 11:30 a.m. Saturday.
Johnsburg 2,808, Woodstock co-op 2,634: At Raymond's Bowl in Johnsburg, Jeff Straulin had a 630 series, with a high game of 220, as Jeff Fryza also had a 220 game for the Skyhawks.
Tyler Busch led the Woodstock co-op with a 561 series, and Zach Myer added a 223 high game.
Rockford East 3,179, Marengo 3,051: At Don Carter Lanes in Rockford, Dakota Termini led the Indians with a 623 series, with Joey Tengler adding a 542 series with a high game of 214.
