Kennedy won the Berman Holiday Classic at Palatine on Saturday at 126 pounds with a 6-4 decision against Metea Valley freshman Devin Kane in the finals. It was the second consecutive win at the Classic for Kennedy, who also won last year at 120. Kennedy, 25-0, is ranked No. 1 at 126 by illinoismatmen.com.
Noteworthy
Tournament roundup: Marengo placed six wrestlers at the Lincoln Holiday Tournament Dec. 27-28 lead by Damon Cloe’s championship at 152. Cloe defeated Highland’s Zach Bromstadt with an 18-7 major decision.
At 113, Corey Graham took second, losing in the finals to Thornton’s Kris Williams. Also for the Indians, Kyle Gara (160) and Justin Dauphin (182) took sixth and Coy Szflarski (170) and Derek Caskey (220) finished eighth.
Marengo finished 10th at the 23 team tournament.
Cary-Grove took fifth place at the Berman Classic and placed seven wrestlers in the top seven. Michael Cullen (19-0) won at 113 with two pins, a technical fall and a major decision in his four wins.
Also for R-B, Grant Sutton took second at 120, losing in the finals to Rock Island’s Barlow McGhee in an, 8-4, decision. McGhee is the No. 1 ranked folkstyle wrestler in the nation by USA Wrestling. Folkstyle is the style wrestled in high school.
