Roundup: Defense helps Jacobs boys stop McHenry

ALGONQUIN – Jacobs seniors Ryan Billings and Julian Lee didn't make much of an impact on the scoreboard Tuesday.

But boys basketball coach Jim Hinkle said they "sparked an aggressive defense" that included 19 steals en route a 67-49 win over McHenry in Fox Valley Conference Valley Division action.

Senior Nick Ledinsky scored 16 points, and seniors Will Schwerdtmann (15 points) and Lake Ojo (12 points) helped take advantage for Jacobs (7-7 overall, 2-1 FVC Valley).

Senior Shane Varvil scored a team-high 16 points in typical fashion, with three 3-pointers, and senior Damian Zalewski added 13 points for McHenry (7-7, 0-2).

Grayslake North 75, Johnsburg 57: At Grayslake, a 25-point night from A.J. Fish that pushed him into the record books as North's all-time leading scorer (931) propelled the Knights to the FVC Fox Division win.

Kevin Dombrowski (13) and Ben Dingman (10) led 12 scorers for the Skyhawks (7-9, 0-2).

Woodstock 75, Grayslake Central 57: At Grayslake, Jordan Turner scored 23 points, and Andy Buhrow added 21 as the Blue Streaks (12-4, 2-0) cruised to the FVC Fox win.

Kirkland Hiawatha 45, Harvard 42: At Kirkland, Fernando Carrera scored a team-high 11 points in the Big Northern Conference East Division loss for the Hornets (3-11, 1-3).


Marengo 49, Richmond-Burton 43: At Marengo, Jessica Villie scored 19 points on nine buckets, and Sabrina Marsh added 17 points in the BNC East Division win for Marengo (6-13, 3-2).

Alex Callanan (16) and Hannah Koenig (11) led the Rockets (9-8, 4-2).

Harvard 39, Kirkland Hiawatha 32: At Harvard, Sam McCloud pulled down a team-high 12 rebounds, and Abby Linhart scored a team-high 17 points in the BNC East win for the Hornets (4-14, 2-4).

Marian Central 55, Aurora Central Catholic 54: At Woodstock, Shannon Wuensch scored 23 points on nine buckets en route to the Suburban Christian Conference crossover win for the Hurricanes (10-5).


St. Charles East 3,042, Huntley 2,730: At St. Charles, Grant Gardner (595 series) and Beau Rehner (586) led the Red Raiders in the loss.

Oregon 3,552, Marengo 3,477: At Marengo, Jason Mueller (627) and Josh Jordan (603) both rolled 222 games for the Indians, and Kyle Alt (615) and Dakota Termini (613) reached the 600-pin series mark in the loss for Marengo.


Marengo 3,096, Oregon 2,306: At Marengo, Susan Anthony (602) rolled the match-best game (228), and Dominique Bailey bowled the high series (631) in the win for the Indians.

Grayslake North 2,399, Johnsburg 2,121: At Johnsburg, Kylie Luszcz rolled a team-high 498 series for the Skyhawks, and Allison Boelter added a 483 in the loss for Johnsburg.

Grayslake Central 2,392, Woodstock co-op 2,265: At Woodstock, Paige Busch rolled a match-best game (241) and high series (534) in the loss for the Blue Streaks.
