Crystal Lake Central senior Gage Harrah pinned Grant’s Quinton Quarles on Saturday to improve his record to 31-1. Quarles is the No. 6-ranked wrestler at 220 pounds in Class 3A by Illinoismatmen.com. Harrah is the top-ranked wrestler at 195 in 2A.

Dundee-Crown senior guard Brandon Rodriguez helped the Chargers win their first three Fox Valley Conference Valley Division games the past week against Jacobs, Prairie Ridge and McHenry. Rodriguez scored 10 points Saturday in D-C’s 49-38 victory against Jacobs. He came back and dropped in 19 against Prairie Ridge on Tuesday in the Chargers’ 51-40 win. Rodriguez also led the Chargers with 20 points and hit the game-winning shot in their 48-43 victory against McHenry Friday night..

Dundee-Crown's Diamond Williams came off the bench to score a team-high 16 points in the Chargers 44-41 win against Huntley. The senior also had 11 rebounds to help keep the Chargers undefeated in the FVC Valley Division. She followed that with 14 points in a non-conference win against Fenton.

Zack Lundquist had another all-around strong game Friday night at Genoa-Kingston, although the Indians lost to the Cogs, 56-51, in their Big Northern Conference East Division game. Lundquist scored 20 points, grabbed eight rebounds and handed out four assists. Marengo (3-6) had a five-point lead slip away in that game in the final 2 minutes. Lundquist, a 6-foot-2 forward playing his third varsity season, scored 14 points in Wednesday’s 57-53 loss at Crystal Lake South. He also had a 27-point game earlier in the season against Burlington Central.

The Wolves' Zach Synon won the 126-pound weight class at the Carson DeJarnett Invitational on Saturday at Sterling. In the championship match, Synon defeated Belvidere North’s Erik Nord, 1-0. Nord is ranked No. 4 at 126 in Class 2A by illinoismatmen.com.

Daniels’ two-run homer in the fifth inning gave the Rockets their three-run lead against Burlington. He had three homers, two doubles and eight RBIs in wins against Warren, Burlington and Marengo.

C-Gs Mike Vilardo produced the numbers in one week most players hope to reach in a high school season. The Trojans’ shortstop hit seven home runs and knocked in 19 runs in six games. He had a pair of two-homer games, including the doubleheader opener against McHenry on Saturday when he hit a grand slam and drove in nine runs. Vilardo had only one game in which he did not hit a homer the past week. For the season, Vilardo is hitting .400 with nine homers, 33 RBIs, 25 runs scored and is 16 of 16 in stolen-base attempts.

Harvard junior Lindsay Melson pitched a perfect game Thursday in the Hornets’ 8-0 victory against Alden-Hebron. Melson struck out 15, adding to her total of 42 strikeouts in 21 innings in the past seven days. She issued one walk. At the plate, Melson went 5 for 9 with two home runs and three RBIs. She is 5-1 and all five victories have been shutouts. She is batting .647 this season.

CL Central's Jake Chrystal found his groove when his team needed him most. The Tigers trailed Marmion Academy, 40-37, in the opening minute of the fourth quarter in the IHSA Class 3A Hampshire Regional final. Chrystal made shots from all over the court and scored eight consecutive points in 1:38 turning the three-point deficit into a 45-40 Tigers lead, and top-seeded Central went on to win, 60-50. He finished with 15 points after scoring 16 against Burlington in the semifinal.

Against Antioch, Marsden pinned ranked 215-pound wrestler Teddy Montemayor. Marsden, undefeated this season, is the top-ranked wrestler at 215, according to illinoismatmen.com.

In the semifinals, Cowan defeated Byron’s Steven Bradley, 9-6, who is ranked sixth.

Cary-Grove forward Claire Jakubicek became the girls basketball program’s all-time leading scorer last weekend against Johnsburg, when she scored her 1,233rd point to eclipse Eve Berry, who held the record since 1988 with 1,232 career points. Jakubicek scored 30 points against Johnsburg and followed it with 15 points against St. Charles North on Tuesday and 18 points against Dundee-Crown on Thursday. She is averaging 18 points and eight rebounds through 10 games this season.

Last week, the Thunder (6-1) won the Vernon Hills Cougar Classic to claim the program’s first tournament title. Junior guard Haylee Nutter scored 20 points in the title game against the host Cougars. Nutter led the Thunder to a Fox Valley Conference crossover win against Crystal Lake South on Tuesday with 16 points. She also scored 12 points in a non-conference victory against Round Lake on Thursday and went 5 for 5 from the free-throw line.

Getzelman went around right end for a 71-yard score on Prairie Ridge’s first play from scrimmage. His second carry went for 44 yards and set up another score for the Wolves.

Marian Central senior RB Jared Koch rushed 15 times for 217 yards and three touchdowns as the Hurricanes rolled to a 40-7 win against Grayslake Central in their IHSA Class 5A second-round playoff game Saturday. Koch rushed for touchdowns of 1, 8 and 76 yards. His 217 yards was his season-high and helped put No. 10-seeded Marian (8-3) into the quarterfinals for the fourth time since 2004.

The Giants’ RB/DB rushed 14 times for 116 yards and a pair of second-half touchdowns as No. 5 Alden-Hebron defeated No. 4 Galena, 21-14, in their IHSA Class 1A first-round playoff game Saturday. It was the Giants’ first road playoff victory in school history. Henken ran for a game-tying 63-yard touchdown in the third quarter, then scored the game-winner on a 12-yard run with 40 seconds remaining.

Huntley senior Marcus Popenfoose threw the discus 202 feet, 4 inches at the Crystal Lake Central Invitational on April 30th, the fourth 200-foot throw in state history, according to the IHSA website. Popenfoose's career-best throw was one of three 198-foot-plus tosses he had at the meet. Champaign St. More's Brandon Noe, who recently threw 203-5, has the other. Popenfoose's throw is the third-best in state history, according to the IHSA website. Popenfoose followed that throw with a 189-4 effort Saturday in the Palatine Relays, which set that meet record. He also threw 57-1 in the shot put to help Huntley’s team take second in the shot put relay.

She is batting .414 with 16 RBIs, three home runs, three triples and two doubles this season. Efflandt suffered her first Fox Valley Conference Valley Division loss Wednesday when Jacobs beat C-G, 3-0. She added a win against McHenry as well.

Cary-Grove forward Korey Kronforst scored the go-ahead goal in the Trojans’ 2-1 victory Thursday against Huntley in a Fox Valley Conference Valley Division showdown. Kronforst got an assist on Brittany Kroening’s goal in the same match and scored a goal during C-G’s 3-0 win against McHenry on Monday. Kronforst helped C-G finish strong in the Pepsi Showdown, scoring two goals and adding an assist in a 3-1 win against Andrew on Saturday.

Richmond-Burton track standout Kyle Wismer won the 400-meter dash and the long jump at Cary-Grove's Al Bohrer Invitational last weekend, leading the Rockets to a second place finish. Wismer broke his own school record by an 1 1/2 inches, jumping 22 feet, 2 inches in the long jump. He also was third in the high jump.

Prairie Ridge gymnast Jenny Covers was amazing once again at the Girls State Gymnastics Tournament, winning her second consecutive vault title with a 9.8 on her second attempt. Covers also followed up last season's all-around title with a third place finish this season and was part of a Wolves team that finished fourth in the team standings in the state meet.

She is the area's first state champion in the all-around event, and the first individual champion in any event for the Wolves in their 12-year history. Covers started the second day, for individual events, at Palatine High School with a 9.775 to win the vault, then scored 9.65 for second on the uneven parallel bars and 9.725 to tie for second in floor exercise. Four medals in two days!

She had seven points the following night in a BNC win over Harvard and was big on the boards. The Indians have won seven of their last eight games.

Skyhawks guard Mike Dixon had a great tournament, and really had to step up his game with Johnsburg center C.J. Fiedorowicz out the last two games with the flu. Dixon had 37 to help carry his team in the final, 25 on Friday in a one point win over Grant, 20 in a win over Marian Central on Wednesday and 26 in a win over Marengo on Tuesday. That's an average of 27 points a game for the week.

This honor usually goes to an individual, but in this case we are giving it to the entire Crystal Lake South defensive unit. The Gators defense allowed seven points to Cary-Grove. Seven points is all they have given up the past two weeks, both to previously unbeaten teams. They made a game-winning stand in overtime, stopping the Trojans on four straight plays from only 10 yards out. South only gave up one first down in the first half and allowed only 120 yards of offense the entire game, while forcing two turnovers.

Harrison Daniels intercepted two passes and caught the go-ahead touchdown pass as the No. 14-seeded Rockets went on the road and defeated No. 3 Braidwood Reed-Custer, 35-24, Saturday night in an IHSA Class 4A playoff first-round game. Daniels intercepted a pass late in the first half to stop a Comets' drive at R-B's 15-yard line. He picked off another pass in the fourth quarter to help seal the victory. Daniels also caught a 51-yard fourth-quarter pass from quarterback Adam Pittser which put the Rockets (6-4) on top for good. Rockets coach Pat Elder also credited Daniels with throwing several key blocks that helped spring running back Justin Russell for his 160 yards rushing.

Richmond-Burton's Jordan Blanton beat Neuqua Valley's Chris Spangler in the 171 pound quarterfinal match at the state wrestling tournament. Blanton trailed 6-2 in the first period and came back to tie Spangler at 6-all, before beating him 10-8 to advance to the finals. Blanton then went on to beat Montini's Carl Foreside 8-6 to win his third state championship, and first at Class AA. Blanton finishes this season with a 41-0 record, and his high school career ends at 152-1.

Marian Central QB Jon Budmayr ignited the Hurricanes offense on Friday night, in the first round playoff game against Sterling, throwing for 367 yards and two TD before halftime. Budmayr used the time that the offensive line provided to connect with five different players, three of whom tallied over 100 yards receiving, and led the Hurricanes to a 46-27 win over the Golden Warriors. The junior finished with 440 passing yards and three TD, on 22-of-38 passing.

Prairie Ridge RB Sam "Soop" Campbell ran for 222 yards and four touchdowns as the Wolves finished off a perfect regular season with a 52-28 win against Johnsburg. The win also gave the Wolves the outright FVC Valley Division championship. Campbell has rushed for 3,101 yards and 30 TD, in his career, heading into the playoffs. He has 1,335 and 19 TD this season.

Woodstock RB Cole Freund anchored a solid Blue Streaks' running game on Friday night, in a 35-7 win over Dundee-Crown. Freund ran for 106 yards and three TDs, and caught one pass for 19 yards. The win makes the Streaks playoff eligible with five wins, and they are in good shape with tiebreaker points if they need them.

Cary-Grove's Kyle Gray had a huge game when they needed it the most. Gray rushed for 121 yards on 15 carries and scored three TDs. He was the only player to find the end zone the entire game. The senior's TDs were from 8, 12 and 24 yards out. C-G won the game 20-0 and moved into first place in the FVC Valley.

Jacobs' QB Kyle Magnuson was instrumental in his teams upset win over CL South, 16-7, on Friday. This is the second straight season that the Golden Eagles have pulled off the upset over the Gators. Magnuson rushed for 89 yards and two TDs (37, 3) on 16 carries in the win. He completed 3-of-5 passes for 42 yards, and did not throw an interception. South was ranked third in 7A, in the AP football rankings.

Harvard RB/DB Jimmy Cradic was all over the field in Friday's 26-0 BNC East win over Richmond-Burton. Cradic ran for a 27-yard TD in the third quarter and then got his second TD on a 38-yard burst into the end zone in the fourth. Cradic also turned in one of the game's biggest defensive plays as the third quarter ended. He made a tackle in the open-field that stalled a Rockets' drive at the 5-yard line, with the Hornets ahead 13-0.

Alden-Hebron FB Patrick Denker gained 256 yards rushing and scored twice to help the Giants remain undefeated. A-H (4-0) beat Brookfield (Wis.) Academy 33-21. Denker also played a key role on defense in the win.

CL Central fullback Anthony Degani rushed for 232 yards and three touchdowns on 28 carries and every time the Tigers needed a big play he seemed up to the task. The Tigers beat Dundee-Crown 35-28. Degani has a nice mix of power and speed and even though everybody knows he will get his carries, he still has success. His TD runs were 27, 30 and 56 yards.

Prairie Ridge kicker Cullen Fahey's 42-yard field goal as time expired kept the Wolves perfect at 2-0, and gave them a 16-14 win over Cary-Grove. The win ended the Trojans 29-game regular-season winning streak and brought down the house. The kick left no doubt and easily would have been good from 52 yards.

McHenry's Mark D'Angelo scored three touchdowns in a 66-29 blowout over Larkin, and the senior wide receiver found three different ways to do it. D'Angelo caught a 25-yard touchdown pass from QB Tyler Marunde in the second quarter, and added second-half touchdowns on a 32-yard run and a 38-yard fumble return.

The recent Jacobs graduate shot a tournament best 4-over-par 74 to win the Senior Division of the MCJGA Chapel Hill Open on Wednesday. Dwyer, who will attend Florida Golf Coast University in the fall, beat Marcus Schwartzburg by two strokes for the win.

Dundee-Crown shortstop Elliot Soto found out he had been drafted by the Minnesota Twins in the 13th round of MLB’s Amateur Draft in the sixth inning of Friday’s state semi-final game against Brother Rice. Soto said he will talk things over with his parents and decide where he wants to play baseball, the Twins (minor leagues) or NCAA Division I Creighton University. The Chargers fell just short in their game against Brother Rice, but Soto did lead off the inning with a single, stole second base and moved to third, putting the tying run just 90 feet away. In Monday’s 9-6 supersectional win over Rock Falls, Soto went 2-for-2 with a triple, homerun, two SBs, three runs scored and he drove in three runs. Not a bad week.
