State Gymnastics update
Here is an update from the IHSA State Gymnastics Meet Friday at Palatine:
There is a new state all-around gymnastics champion. Warren's Kim Gotlund scored 38.275 to win the all-around Friday at Palatine High School. Prairie Ridge junior Jenny Covers, the defending all-around champion, finished third at 37.675.
Prairie Ridge's team did not get off to the start it wanted in the afternoon session. Covers fell on the uneven bars and scored 8.975. She did score a 9.750 on vault and leads that event, which she won last year. She would have scored higher on her second vault, on which she added a full twist, but she came up short on her landing.
The Wolves had some solid routines on the balance beam, led by Covers' 9.5, Taylor Weber's 9.35 and Molly Sandquist's 9.225.
Covers (vault, floor exercise) and Sandquist (balance beam) will compete in Saturday night's finals and can pick up more team points there.
