Big showdown looms
Things are heatin’ up for The Burg and the Shire’s girls basketball teams. Each of them are one win away from sectional titles, and a long awaited meetin’ between the two.
The Rant has wanted to see this game for awhile now and is rootin’ for what would be a fantastic matchup between two of the best girls teams in the area. The Skyhawks have to beat Regina Dominican and the Whip-Purs play Oswego. The Rant wishes ‘em both luck and hopes to see them playin’ each other on Monday night in Elgin.
The Rant also has to congratulate The Grove on a great season, especially after losin’ point guard Meg Straumann to injury. They played a unbeaten Geneva team and hung tough and certainly gave them a scare.
The Rant will bet you a Coke that the Trojans will be the top girls basketball team next season and will have a real shot at state.

Once again our area wrestlers have proven that this county can hold its own and then some on the mat.
The Tigers destroyed Washington, 46-23, at the Dual Team Geneseo Sectional on Tuesday night, and will wrestle for a dual team state title in Class 2A this weekend. This year they would not face Montini until the finals because they’re on opposite sides of the bracket. Montini beat Central in the semifinals of the dual team state meet last season and went on to win it all. The Tigers took third last season.
The Rant does not want to forget our individual state title winners from last weekend. The Tigers’ Trevor Jauch (125) and Joey Kielbasa (145) each won their second titles in a row, and teammate Austin Marsden (189) won his first. Senior David Vinton surprised a few people by winning his first state title at 215 pounds for the Wolves.

It wasn’t just The Burg’s girls that had a great night on Tuesday.
The boys team played its best game of the season in a big win against Marian Central. The Skyhawks took the Hurricanes to the woodshed and let everybody know what they are capable of when playin’ their best ball.
Hopefully they can use that momentum and play like that in the postseason. For the ‘Canes, it’s only one loss and now they know what level they need to play at to get anywhere in the playoffs.
From The Rant’s “I don’t believe what I just saw” file, The Ridge beats The Grove in boys hoops by 13 points and The Shire’s boys beat Richmond-Burton by 28, holdin’ them to 23 total points.
What’s goin’ on there, boys?
