Gehrig named Huntley's head football coach
Matt Gehrig has accepted the job as head football coach at Huntley, Red Raiders athletic director Bruce Blumer announced Wednesday.
Gehrig replaces Steve Graves, who was 25-23 in five seasons with the Red Raiders and took them to the playoffs the last two seasons.
In a news release, Blumer said Gehrig's hiring will become official with the school board's approval at its March 18 meeting.
Gehrig was head coach at Larkin the last two years, where the Royals finished 9-9. He will teach at Huntley at a position yet to be determined.
Gehrig graduated from Burlington Central in 1997 and was a two-way starter on the offensive and defensive lines. He played at Eastern Illinois University on a football scholarship and was an All-Ohio Valley Conference selection in 2000. He was a captain for the Panthers as a junior and senior.
"Matt will inject a great deal of enthusiasm and passion into the Huntley High School football program," Blumer said. "He is very knowledgeable about the game and teaches a system that kids pick up quickly.
Despite his young age, Matt is ‘old school’ in his approach to the game. I think his system will allow kids to think less, react more, and play aggressively."
