Summer, time for 7 on 7’s

The Rant likes the easy livin’ in summertime, but not everybody has it so good.

Most of the football teams in the state are takin’ part in some type of 7-on-7 scrimmages, or practices, as the middle of August and the start of a new season draws near.

Dealin’ with the heat can be drainin’ enough, but runnin’ and liftin’ in this heat is brutal.

If ya play football and ya aren’t in the weight room, then you are already behind.

Looks like Marian Central QB Ben Krol is doin’ good after hurtin’ his knee during the basketball season. The Rant knows that a healthy Krol is a big deal for the ‘Canes success this season.

The Rant thinks Marian should have a strong season with some of the players comin’ back, but ya never know what to expect from the SCC.

Corey Cavitt should have a good year at RB and if the offensive line comes together he could be one of the area’s best. Krol should be more comfortable at QB and the coachin’ always seems to pull these guys together.

Perhaps the biggest shot in the arm will come from the ‘Canes bein’ able to platoon players, something they have not been able to do for several years.

For once The Rant agrees with the IHSA. They are doin’ away with the slam dunk contest durin’ the state finals that has been a fixture since 1992.

The Rant thinks this is a good idea because nobody seems to care about the contest, often players who sign up don’t show up, and let’s face it, the overall quality of the contest is not up to par.

Good riddance!
