CARY – Pitching and defense are the hallmarks of winning baseball.
ROLLING MEADOWS – Cary-Grove’s Chris Federighi won his first two matches handily before running into trouble and injury in the third round on the opening day of the IHSA Boys Tennis State Tournament on Thursday.
Cary-Grove tennis player Chris Federighi was rewarded for a solid regular season and dominating performances in the Fox Valley Conference and sectional tournaments with a top-32 seed at state.
CARY – Cary-Grove tennis player Chris Federighi continued his late-season dominance, dropping only one game Saturday in winning the singles title at the Cary-Grove Sectional.
LAKE VILLA – Johnsburg’s No. 1 doubles team of senior Brayton Regner and sophomore Colin Goulet made it to the semifinals in the IHSA Lakes Boys Tennis Sectional on Saturday, qualifying the duo for the state tournament, which starts Thursday throughout the northwest suburbs.
HAMPSHIRE – Danielle Simons earned her 20th win of the season Wednesday with a 10-0, six-inning Big Northern Conference East Division softball victory against Hampshire.
CRYSTAL LAKE – Johnsburg’s Zach Ignoffo limited Crystal Lake Central to four hits in a 2-1 Fox Valley Conference Fox Division win Monday.
MELROSE PARK – Marian Central’s Gregg Wikierak witnessed a feat Saturday he never had seen in more than three decades as a baseball coach.
Something was in the air Monday for three baseball pitchers in McHenry and Kane counties. Crystal Lake Central’s Connor Sadzeck, Johnsburg’s Mitch Noncek and Hampshire’s Shane Hernandez each threw a no-hitter.
CRYSTAL LAKE – Crystal Lake Central got some good preparation for upcoming postseason tournaments, taking fourth place and putting its top two singles players in championship matches at the Tigers’ boys tennis invitational Saturday.
CARLYLE – Alden-Hebron’s bass fishing team came into the first day of the IHSA state tournament Friday at Carlyle Lake off a second-place finish at the Chain O’ Lakes Sectional on April 28.
MARENGO – Richmond-Burton edged Belvidere North by five points Thursday to win the 10-team Ed Reeves Invitational.
WOODSTOCK – Woodstock and Huntley entered Thursday’s boys tennis dual meet with 1-10 records in the Fox Valley Conference.
JOHNSBURG – Mary Chamberlain (6-10) struck out seven, walked none and earned the victory as Johnsburg’s softball team beat Dundee-Crown, 5-3, on Wednesday in a Fox Valley Conference crossover.
HARVARD – John Mac-Kenzie drove in the winning run in the bottom of the seventh inning to give Harvard a 5-4 Big Northern Conference East Division win against Marengo on Tuesday.
LOMBARD – Dave Luczak pitched seven innings and struck out five for Marian Central in its 4-2 Suburban Christian Conference Blue Division baseball win against Montini on Monday.
CRYSTAL LAKE – Crystal Lake Central’s Tommy Nelson and Tyler George combined to go 6-0 at No. 1 and No. 2 singles, respectively, and the Tigers won the Prairie Ridge Tennis Invitational on Saturday.
CRYSTAL LAKE – Crystal Lake South coach Brian Bogda told his players to chip away after falling behind, 5-0, in the first inning of Thursday’s FVC crossover against Grayslake Central.
HEBRON – The Alden-Hebron baseball team picked up its first win of the season with a 7-6 Northeastern Athletic Conference victory against Rockford Christian on Tuesday.
HARVARD – Patrick Towne drove in two runs in the bottom of the seventh inning to give Harvard an 8-7 non-conference win against Rockford Lutheran on Monday.
HUNTLEY – Huntley’s baseball team lost by 10 runs in five innings Tuesday against Prairie Ridge.
JOHNSBURG – In a battle of unbeatens in Fox Valley Conference boys tennis, Crystal Lake South remained perfect, defeating Johnsburg, 6-1, on Tuesday.
JOHNSBURG – Derek Talbot allowed only two hits to Dundee-Crown in Johnsburg’s 4-0 Fox Valley Conference crossover baseball victory Tuesday.
MARENGO – Marengo’s baseball team scored three runs in the bottom of the seventh inning Monday to come back and beat Oregon, 4-3, in a Big Northern Conference crossover game. Junior Brad Seemann had the winning hit for the Indians (3-13), knocking in Jarvis Hernandez and Jake Wajda on a two-out single.
CRYSTAL LAKE – Billy Wright went 4 for 4 with a double and triple Friday to lead Crystal Lake South to an 8-4 Fox Valley Conference crossover win, Prairie Ridge’s first conference loss.
MARENGO – Warm, windy days usually don’t make for great pitching performances.
MARENGO – Marian Central’s No. 1 singles player, Riley Waters, showed up with his team to play Marengo in boys tennis Thursday, but he ended up playing Winnebago’s Jordan Emmert.
WAUCONDA – The Jacobs boys tennis team improved to 9-2 this season with a 7-0 non-conference win against Wauconda on Wednesday.
WOODSTOCK – Woodstock scored six times in the bottom of the sixth inning, eventually forced extra innings and defeated Jacobs, 10-9, in eight innings in their Fox Valley Conference crossover baseball game Tuesday.
McHENRY – Corey Szamlewski set a school record with a vault of 14 feet, 1 inch to lead McHenry to first place as a team at its own triangular Monday at McCracken Field.
GRAYSLAKE – Hannah Mahoney drove in the game-winning runs Monday in the Crystal Lake South softball team’s 5-3 win against Grays-lake North.
The best word to describe boys tennis this season might be parity.
WOODSTOCK – Marian Central’s Karl Steiger picked the perfect time to get his first hit of the game Wednesday against Richmond-Burton.
WOODSTOCK – Richmond-Burton’s softball team roughed up Marian Central for 14 hits in a 12-2 non-conference win Monday.
All ya have ta do is look outside to see that spring is here, and with all this great weather leadin’ into this new season our spring sports have begun.
CARY – The Cary-Grove volleyball team continued its strong start to the 2009 season with a decisive 25-22, 25-9 win against Harvard in non-conference play.
