Bud Lachel has been coaching Cary-Grove tennis since players showed up to matches with one racket and drank water out of empty tennis ball cans.
Rain delays were the story on the opening day of the IHSA Girls Tennis State Finals on Thursday as tournament officials tried to keep the matches outside and preserve play in the consolation bracket.

CARY – Crystal Lake Central captured the singles and doubles titles and won the team championship Saturday at the Cary-Grove girls tennis sectional.

CARY – Crystal Lake South didn’t dominate at the Fox Valley Conference Tournament on Friday, but the Gators used a team approach to win their second conference championship.
WOODSTOCK – Natalie Ricca had 23 assists to lead Crystal Lake Central’s volleyball team to a 25-17, 25-12 win against Woodstock North on Tuesday to remain undefeated in the Fox Valley Conference Fox Division.
McHENRY – McHenry was given two early goals and cruised to a 4-0 win against Harlem at the McHenry Invitational on Friday.

ELGIN – Connie Ellett shot an even-par 35 to take medalist honors for the Hampshire girls golf team Monday at the South Elgin Invitational at Elgin Country Club.
ROCKFORD – Crystal Lake South girls tennis coach Don Nead couldn’t have asked for much more Saturday, because you can’t beat perfect.
WOODSTOCK – Melissa Rose won the 200-yard individual medley with a time of 2:33.99 and Lauren Curtis (2:04.97) won the 200 freestyle for Cary-Grove in a 86-84 Fox Valley Conference victory Thursday against Woodstock.
CRYSTAL LAKE – Lauren Steinkamp and Marcilyn Rowan are putting their experience to work playing in their senior season at No. 1 doubles for Jacobs.

CRYSTAL LAKE – It all came down to the last score Monday at Crystal Lake Country Club.
CRYSTAL LAKE – Cary-Grove’s girls volleyball team won its second tournament this year, going 5-0 in the six-team Prairie Ridge Tournament to win the event for the third consecutive season.
MUNDELEIN – Delainey Peterson shot a 7-over-par 42, earned medalist honors and led Prairie Ridge’s girls golf team to a 180-217 victory against Lake Zurich on Thursday at Village Green, for the Wolves’ eighth consecutive win.
CRYSTAL LAKE – J.B. Garoufalis and Paul Schlimm shared medalist honors for the Crystal Lake Central boys golf team as the Tigers defeated Crystal Lake South, 167-176, in a Fox Valley crossover match Wednesday at Crystal Lake Country Club.
CRYSTAL LAKE – McHenry and Crystal Lake Central were challenged, but both teams came away with two wins Wednesday at the Crystal Lake Central Quadrangular.

RICHMOND – Richmond-Burton’s girls volleyball team remained undefeated Tuesday after a 25-19, 25-18, win against Winnebago.
GRAYSLAKE – Richmond-Burton’s girls volleyball team didn’t drop a game through four matches of Grayslake Central’s Ram Slam. The Rockets finally lost in the first game of the final Saturday.
CRYSTAL LAKE – With the advent of divisional play, the Fox Valley Conference girls tennis crossover match between Crystal Lake Central at Crystal Lake South on Thursday did not have any bearing on the conference race.

ANTIOCH – McHenry’s Dylan Clohessy scored the winning goal with eight seconds left in the game to give the Warriors a 2-1 non-conference boys soccer win against Antioch on Monday.
PLAINFIELD – Sam Boesch led Huntley’s girls volleyball team with 12 kills Saturday in the Red Raiders’ 25-21, 25-19 win against Naperville North in the championship match of the Plainfield North Tournament.
ANTIOCH – Richmond-Burton’s girls cross country team won the Pat Harland Invitational on Thursday, placing four runners in the top 10.
CRYSTAL LAKE – Junior Jenna Wallace won at No. 1 singles, 6-3, 6-0, on Tuesday as Crystal Lake Central edged Cary-Grove, 4-3, in girls tennis.
MCHENRY – McHenry christened its newly surfaced tennis courts with a 7-0, Fox Valley Conference crossover win against Woodstock North on Tuesday.
HAMPSHIRE – Belvidere North might have assumed a victory in Monday’s non-conference boys soccer match against Hampshire was inevitable.

With the graduation of three of the area’s all-time top players, this year’s girls tennis season should see more parity, particularly at the top of the lineups.
